Prospect Watch: Ray Adams (2019)
Class of 2019 guard Ray Adams of Webster Groves has one of the sweetest shooting strokes in the Show-Me State.
The 6’3″ Adams provided excellent 3-point shooting to a Webster Groves team that powered its way to the Class 5 state championship in 2017. Adams keeps the floor spaced for opposing teams that try to double-team Webster’s duo of five-star players Courtney Ramey and Carte’are Gordon.
As a sophomore, Adams averaged 6.5 points while making an impressive 49 percent of his shots from beyond the 3-point line, making 61 of his 123 attempts from past the arc. In fact, 123 of his 135 attempts last season were from 3-point territory.
With his size and shooting ability, Adams has already drawn collegiate interest from schools such as Western Illinois, North Dakota, Lindenwood and UMSL.
As he enters his junior season, Adams is out to prove that he is more than just a 3-point specialist. During the summer grassroots season and in the Rameybasketball Fall League, Adams has showcased his ability to score off the dribble and move without the ball to get buckets.
“I wanted to focus on being more than just a shooter,” Adams said. “I’ve been working on getting to the basket more so defenders can’t just stay on me on the perimeter. Now, I’m able to shoot and get to the basket.
“During the summer, when people saw me play, they said, ‘Ray, I didn’t know you can do that.’ Everyone is used to seeing me just shooting the ball, but when they saw me getting to the basket and dunking, they are surprised.”
During the summer, Adams played for the Team Ramey 16U team that competed in the Adidas Uprising Gauntlet series.
“It helped a lot to play against the top competition in the Gauntlet because that is what we are going to play against during the high school season with our national schedule,” Adams said.
