Prospect Spotlight: James Cameron-Nelson (2019)
As he heads into his junior season with one of the state’s most storied programs, Linn-Mar 6-foot-4 forward James Cameron-Nelson could be a surprise player for the team,
His game has come a long way over the past season, thanks to relentless work and time spent with Iowa Pump N Run, and various skill-development camps.
Regardless of what his role on the floor may be this season with the Lions, Cameron-Nelson says his main objective is to be a positive, uplifting teammate.
“I feel like my role will be the guy to encourage everybody, like the energy; the energy off the bench, the energy on the bench, the energy in practice,” said Cameron-Nelson.
“I want to be that person to always push everybody and makes sure everybody stays on track and is doing what they’re supposed to be doing.”
With an ever-developing skill-set, and an ability to play several different positions, Cameron-Nelson will bring some versatility to the Lions’ roster.
“I feel like one of my biggest strengths is probably picking up the team, like even if we’re doing bad, just being very encouraging to everyone,” said Cameron-Nelson. “And then another strength is probably being able to be a guy that can post up, but also play on the wing.”
He spent his spring and summer improving with Iowa Pump ‘N Run 16U, and says it was invaluable experience.
“This offseason with Pump really went well. It was the second year that team was together and we blended together really well,” said Cameron-Nelson.
“I’m really excited to see what next year brings, and I love those guys, it’s like a second family to me.”
Her added: “I really been working on my ball-handling with them, and really getting my mid-range game honed it. And I’ve really been working on my outside shot, too.”
Now, with his junior season just a month away, Cameron-Nelson says his goal is to simply seize the moment.
“I just want to take advantage of the opportunities that are presented to me,” said Cameron-Nelson. “And just be the best teammate I can be.”
