Prospect Spotlight: Jack Wetzel (2020)
Cedar Rapids Kennedy has a 6-foot-4 guard to keep an eye one, and Jack Wetzel could be in line for a breakout season with the Cougars this winter.
He played sparingly last season as a freshman with the state qualifying squad, a rare-feat for a first year player. It’s his above average size and offensive versatility that makes him such a threat.
“My strength as a player is that I can really get to the rack, and I can create my own shot. I’m a good catch-and-shoot player, and I can create for my teammates. And then rebounding, I can grab some boards,” said Wetzel.
“What I need to improve the most is my first step speed and first step explosion. And also I need to just improve my shooting.”
After spending his summer with one of the Midwest’s best teams, Quad City Elite 15U, Wetzel says he improved his ability to get to the rim.
“My role with them was to be a scorer, and then create and pass. And rebounding was a major role for me, too. I was really happy with how I played, and I think I really improved my ability to get to the rack and finish,” he said.
Now, as he heads into what could be a breakout sophomore season with Kennedy, Wetzel will take that year of varsity experience and look forward to a much bigger role with the team.
“It was a great season last year, I got to play with a lot of great players. And just to get the chance to play alongside them was a great opportunity for me,” said Wetzel.
“This summer, we had the summer league, and I realized my role has changed a lot. This year, I’ll have to create my own shot and create for my teammates more.”
