Prospect Spotlight: Dylan Thompson (2021)
Dylan Thompson, a freshman at Georgetown Prep, is tracking among the top players locally in his class. The 6-foot-3 guard, who says he started playing organized basketball at age seven, displays intriguing craftiness along with ideal physicality.
“I started working out with dad since young age,” Thompson said. “I’ve always been on the taller side getting into high school, but not always the most athletic so I got used to being crafty.”
Thompson is a southpaw that can get to the basket, spin, get a man in the air, and finish. He’s a strong wing that can score from all three levels, and works hard defensively.
“I’ve been working on my hook shot. I’ve been working on ii with my grandfather,” Thompson explained. “It’s a sot a lot of people don’t use now, and it’s really effective.”
Thompson displayed during pickup that he can knock down open shots. He works hard on the defensive glass, and prides himself on playing hard at all times.
“Coming in as a freshman it’s probably gonna be a 6th man, but still think I have a chance to be a big contributor for the team,” Thompson said of his role this season. “I just have prove to coach that I can hang with these guys. I think I’ve been doing it so far, but I just have to continue to do it.”
Thompson believes he’s always been a good shooter. Using his size, he’s now starting to learn when to get it off.
“I think I’ve always had a good shooting touch,” Thompson began. “I’ve been told that a lot, but now I’m stating to learn when to drive, take my shot, and be more versatile on the floor.”
Thompson is very ambitious, and he has good reason to be. He is clearly focused on being the best player he can be, and is determined to work as hard as he can to reach his goals.
“I’m definitely still improving my IQ, it can always get higher. I want to be a little better of a passer. I think I can pass fairly well, but it needs improvement. I just want to work on everything,” Thompson declared. “My goal is to be one of the best players to come out of this area. The goal is to make it to the league, so just keep working every single day. I’ve been getting up before school, two and three a days. Just gotta keep staying on that path and see how it goes.”
What can Thompson bring to Georgetown Prep? And down the road, a college program?
“I think a guy that can play multiple positions. Post up smaller guards. Blow by bigger guards, and do a bit of everything.”
