Prospect Spotlight: Ben Petro
The Grand Canyon region is shaping up to be one of the best regions in 4A. A number of the teams bring back key prospects from this past season. One of the key players for Bradshaw Mountain is Ben Petro. Petro, a 6’6 2018 Center, looks poised to have a big season and be one of the reasons that Bradshaw Mountain makes a big jump this season.
Ben Petro High School
Petro played huge this summer and this past season. His size, strength, and work ethic aided him in being a double-double threat. In addition to solid play, Petro brings leadership to this group as well.
As one of the top players on last year’s team, a number of players in the program will naturally look up to him. Further, he embraces this role and has strove to make it one of his strengths. In fact, when asked what he feels like he brings a college program, he immediately noted, “I am a leader”.
Further, he added, “I always have a positive attitude” while “setting an example for the rest of my teammates to follow”. This would obviously assist him at the next level and at his current spot at Bradshaw Mountain. Bradshaw struggled last season, but brings back a solid core of players who will look to make it a better season.
As far as his goals are concerned for this upcoming season, he noted “Just to do my job by doing everything that coach asks”. Moreover, he echoed his sentiments about leadership by adding that being a good leader and example is also his go for this season. As a result of this, he hopes that it helps his team “go to state”.
As a means of helping his team go to state, he mentioned that he feels like he will need to be more “aggressive on offense and be more of a scorer”. Further, he has been working a lot this off-season on “driving the ball from the perimeter” as well as on his “mid-range shot”.
His coach absolutely raves about his post play and physicality. Petro is a tough young man who competes at a high level and has a soft touch around the rim.
The 4A Grand Canyon Region is going to be tough this season as a number of teams return talented players. Petro will be one of the better players in the region and shoulder a lot of responsibility. In order for Bradshaw Mountain to improve, he will need to play a vital role.
Ben Petro College Interest
At this time, Petro does not have any college offers. With that said, he noted that he has received interest from “some NAIA schools”. Those schools include: “Embry Riddle, Eastern Oregon, Graceland, Faith Baptist Bible College”.
Petro is looking for a school that has “nice campus” and is “affordable” while having his major. He is hopeful to go into a journalism major. As far as the actual team is concerned, he mentioned that having a “good, positive atmosphere… is the biggest thing for me”.
Ben Petro College Projection
Petro is a little undersized to play the center position at most NAIA Division-I or NCAA Division-II schools. With that said, he is strong and plays extremely hard. He could be a solid fit at a low NAIA Division-I, NCAA Division-II or a high NAIA Division-II.
