Prospect Spotlight 2019: Kevon Voyles
Kevon Voyles, 6’3″, CG, 2018. Stephen Decatur Seahawks. Berlin, MD.
Grassroots Team: New World, VA.
Last season we saw Kevon live at the MD 4A State semifinals played @ the University Of MD. The Seahawks lost to the eventual MD 3A State Champion, the powerful Poly Engineers of Baltimore. It was just the second loss for Decatur who finished @ 25-2, the 1st an OT one point loss to Potomac HS of Northern, VA one of the best teams in VA with numerous state titles. Kevon was very impressive in the semifinals & studying numerous Stephen Decatur replays from 2016-17. We got another look at Kevon in the DMV Elite 80 where he shined against some of the best competition in MD, DC & VA. We project Kevon as D1 prospect & he currently holds an offer from D1 Maryland Eastern Shore (MEAC) & interest from LMU, Lincoln Memorial & Catawaba. We believe Kevon is being under recruited due to Stephen Decatur’s somewhat remote location on the Eastern Shore of southern, MD. Last season Kevon averaged 17 points per game, rebounds & 5 assists for Decatur & he was awarded 1st Team All Bayside All Star Team. This summer he averaged 18 points, 5 rebounds & 3 assists for New World in grassroots play.
Kevon possesses an excellent overall game & the smooth lefty can get to the rim off the dribble & finish with both hands. He is very fast & quick, excelling in the transition game where Kevon uses his athleticism & vertical to finish above the rim. When he is in attack mode, Kevon is always a threat to throw down a dunk off one or 2 legs. He can can accelerate from a standstill or slow pace & get into top gear very fast. As a CG Kevon has very good ball handling skills & moves very well laterally & downhill on the ball. He can beat his defender off the dribble from coast to coast with a hesitation blow by or in the half court. In the DMV Elite 80 Kevon displayed a between the legs cross over & a very quick & compact going left spin & finishing with his right hand. He has very good passing skills, court vision & plays with a high IQ. Kevon is a ball mover & can make all the passes such as kick outs, drop offs, alley oops & post entry passes to this seasons big, 2020 6’9″ Churchill Bounds. From the 3 point line & perimeter Kevon is a knockdown shooter on or off the dribble. He has near perfect shot mechanics, with a high release & elevation, backspin, follow thru & squaring up. Last season Kevon converted over 40% of his 3 point shots.
When players perform the intangibles it takes their game to another level & recruiting status. Kevon is a winner who impacts the game without scoring. He gets the 50/50 balls, makes steals, hockey assist & more. Last season in a game vs Snow Hill Kevon scored 2 points, but played great defense & made the extra pass to win the game. Kevon says,” I consider my defense a strength & I am always locked in. I play the oppositions best scorer & I take great pride when I shut them down. My closeouts & help-side defense is very good. Winning is by far my top priority & I will go the floor for lose balls & take charges.” Kevon has great dedication to basketball & works very hard on his game. He adds, This off season I have added more overall athleticism & speed. My range has expanded & I my handle is better. I run a lot & work on speed & agility. Thru the week I do 3 mile runs, in addition to 100 & 200 meter sprints. I add in weight training & plyos such as resistance bands & the leg stabilizer. My goals are to improve my shooting & handle & I work on my basketball drills daily.”In his down time, Kevon likes to study Kobe Bryant & Harden of the NBA.
In the classroom Kevon is working towards a 3.0 GPA & is making very good progress. He is very close to his family & names his mom, grandma, grandpa & his uncle as his role models.
Stephen Decatur must replace 6’8″ Keve Aluma who is playing at D1 Wofford & Gray Bridell now at Salisbury University from last season. However, the Seahawks will be led by Kevon,Churchill Bounds and transfer 6’1″ 2018 G John Taylor from Wicomico HS ( Wi Hi ) which gives Stephen Decatur 3 go to players. Kevon says his goal is to get back to the University of Maryland & win a MD State 3A Championship. We will be attending several Decatur games this season & provide live game reports & player updates in the up & coming teams & players from the Maryland Eastern Shore.
