Preseason Player of the Year: Trenton Massner, Wapello (2018)
Certainly one of the more underrated plays in Iowa, Massner pieced together a remarkable junior season with the Indians, and there’s no reason to believe he won’t do the same this winter. Currently Iowa’s 85th-ranked 2018, Massner will likely be bumped up in the next installment of rankings.
First Team (2016-17 stats in italics)
Trenton Massner, Wapello (2018) 22.9 PPG, 44 3FG%, 5.3 APG, 3.1 SPG, 5.3 RPG
There’s nothing that this skilled Wapello guard can not do. And whether it’s scoring in bunches, assisting at a high rate, or swiping tons of steals on the defensive end, one thing is certain: Massner will be prolific each night out.
Zack Lasek, Highland, Riverside (2020) 15.5 PPG, 61 FG%, 1.7 BPG, 7.1 RPG
In most other circumstances, this highly-ranked prospect would be a shoo-in for player of the year. Iowa’s 2nd-ranked 2020, Lasek was named Prep Hoops Iowa’s Freshman of the Year last season, and should continue to dominate as a sophomore and thereafter.
Brady Walker, Louisa-Muscatine (2018) 17.9 PPG, 59 FG%, 5.5 RPG
The Falcons struggled to a 4-18 record last season, but Walker was a bright spot. His scoring efficiency was his strength as a junior, netting 59 percent of his field goal attempts. Look for him to get his squad closer to the .500 mark this winter.
Cameron Millikin, Pekin (2019) 14.5 PPG, 80 FT%, 2.0 SPG
This 5-foot-10 guard gets it done on both sides of the ball, and will score in bunches and wreak-havoc on the defensive end. Look for him to lead a veteran Panthers squad through a very good season.
Logan Belzer, Wapello (2018) 11.4 PPG, 42 3FG%, 4.6 APG, 2.8 SPG
The second Wapello Indians representative on the first team, Belzer is the McCollum to Massner’s Lillard (Portland Trailblazers, folks). He’ll light it up from deep, assist in bunches, and could be among the conference leaders in steals.
