Pangos: 2020 Illinois Scouting Pt 1
PrepHoops was in the house in La Grange, Illinois all weekend for the Pangos All-Midwest Frosh/Soph Camp featuring some of the premier young prospects in the Midwest. We have extensive scouting on the event. Here is part 1 of our 2020 Illinois Scouting Report.
PG DJ Steward (Fenwick)
Steward was solid throughout the camp, but saved his best for last. He was very very good in the all-star game on Sunday. The 6’1” point guard has good length and feel out on the perimeter. Silky smooth game with his handles, passing, and scoring. Steward is developing into a very good pull up shooter from three. Loves to use ball screens and shoot behind them drilling deep shots. He has the creativity and handles to get where he wants on the floor. Mixed in a variety of scoop shots and runners. Did struggle finishing on those shots more than usual however. Defensively we really like what he brings to the table being able to block shots of opposing guards and get steals. One of the elite prospects in Illinois and our current #1 in 2020.
PG Adam Miller (Morgan Park)
The 6’4” point guard was an absolute beast at the camp. He made a strong case why he should take the #1 spot. Miller is an explosive point guard with size and incredible handles. I think his ball handling against quality athletes was what impressed most. Plays with a great flare for the game. Electric passer that made some incredible dishes throughout the event. He took a lot of threes and at times you could say he forced it a bit, but he did display that that is definitely a weapon in his game that will be adequate going forward. Hit them both off the catch and pulling up. Big time high-major recruit.
PG Tyler Beard (Whitney Young)
Absolutely dominant weekend from Beard. It was the best we have ever seen the Whitney Young 2020 prospect. What impressed us most was how he showed off his complete floor game. Got to the hoop with his speed and burst off the bounce. Also used that athleticism in the open floor where he was a tough cover. His jump shot was definitely a major weapon and if he shoots it like he did over the weekend will open up all kinds of avenues for him. He hit from three throughout the camp at a nice clip especially pulling up off the bounce. Passed it well and proved he can be a point guard at the college level. Secured a top 5 spot in the Illinois 2020 class.
PG Reggie Strong (Farragut)
Strong is a lefty point guard that is long and wiry. He impacts the game with his tenacity on both ends. Defensively he uses his length and anticipation to get steals and get into his man causing havoc. Strong has the ability to get in the lane consistently with his crossover and quick first step. Jump shot continues to improve each time we see him especially from three. Excels playing in an up and down game where he can make plays in transition. Top 10 player in 2020 from Illinois. Mid-major prospect at this stage.
PF Tremear Fraley (Bogan)
Fraley is a prospect that emerged on our radar at the Pangos event. He is a 6’8” big man with legit size and strength on the interior. Knows how to use his strength around the hoop playing physical and getting on the offensive glass for put backs. Nimble footwork and moves well around the hoop. Fraley is a big man that could emerge this season at Bogan.
SG Danny Blank (St. Francis)
Blank is a 6’2” two guard that is a solid perimeter shooter. Drilled multiple shots from beyond the arc with a clean looking shooting stroke. Liked how he competed on the defensive end of the floor.
C Ideary Mooney (Bogan)
Mooney is another post prospect from Bogan that is a potential breakout candidate this season. At 6’7” he has a thick body and is a quality rebounder fighting on the interior. His hands could improve and at times he brings the ball too low and it gets stripped. Flashed some shooting potential hitting a three.
PF Marcus Dorsey (Thornwood)
Great size out of this Thornwood 6’6” combo forward. Leans more toward the power forward position. Solid rebounder and defends well in a ball screen.
PG Michael Osborne (Proviso East)
Osborne flashed as a freshman last season and has continued to make strides in his game. The 6’0” point guard has quality length and is more athletic than what we saw out of him last season. Handles it well and likes to slash off the bounce and get to the hoop. Plays very hard. Can be a bit turnover prone.
SF Nate Santos (Geneva)
This was my first time seeing Santos in a while as he had been injured. The 6’6” wing is the younger brother of Mizzou wing KJ Santos. Nate has some of the similar tools that his brother showed with his size for position and length. Can also shoot it from the perimeter. Smooth looking shot from beyond the arc. Santos showed he can handle it some as well using a shot fake and blowing by his man. Lots of upside here and should be monitored by D1 programs!
C Shontrail Key (Kenwood)
Key is a thick bodied post that is a quality area rebounder. Mauls weaker opponents on the glass as he makes an effort to be a dominant force on the glass. He positions well and boxes out. Offensively he is still raw. Right now more of a rebounder and shot blocker.
F James Wolf (Latin)
Wolf is a country strong forward that is very strong in his arms. He finished well when in the lane and showed a little athleticism around the cup. Was productive combo forward.
PG Mikkel Rochelle (Mt. Carmel)
The 5’10” Mt. Carmel point guard is a compact and stocky guard that at times was very ball dominant. Not overly athletic, but strong with the ball attacking off the bounce. Rebounds well for a point guard.
SG Keshawn Williams (Bloom)
Williams had a phenomenal weekend. The Bloom 2020 shooting guard was the best player on the floor in the top 60 all-star game on Sunday and definitely deserved to be in the top all-star game. He is only 6’1”, but can really flat out score! Williams is a thin and wiry two guard that has crisp handles and an explosive first step. Good straight line driver off the bounce. He also shot it well from three all weekend. Low-major D1 prospect that if he grows could be a mid-major.
SF Isaiah Burrell (Kenwood)
Burrell has size and athleticism at 6’6”. He is a rangy defender that has a chance to be a quality defender as his career progresses. Best in an up and down game where he can get out and make plays as a finisher. Struggles at times finishing around the hoop and is more prospect than player at this stage.
SF Collin Woods (Hampshire)
Woods is a 6’4” small forward with excellent length and he was most effective throughout the camp on the defensive end of the floor. Used his physical tools and anticipation to block and alter several shots by wings. Emerging skill set.
F Sangolay Njie (Whitney Young)
Njie plays with an all-out motor! The combo forward has great functional strength. Plays great in the open floor running hard and getting rewarded with passes that he finished with slams. Also can handle it in space. Tough to stop when he is going downhill. Energy rebounder that gets second chance points on the offensive glass.
C Martice Mitchell (Bloom)
Mitchell has a lot of potential, but has never quite put it all together. He started to show that this weekend at Pangos. The 6’9” Bloom product has great height and length for the center position. Will need to add strength going forward. It was nice to see him compete and show more toughness around the hoop. Hit the glass at a nice clip and ran the floor extremely well. Got on the glass for a few put backs. Offensively he is still unrefined and timing needs to get better, but he definitely has D1 upside.
C Joshua Ivory (Peoria Manual)
Ivory is a 6’6” wide bodied post that is a space eater on the interior. He takes up space on the defensive end and clogs the defense. Ivory actually moves pretty well for his size. Showed some touch on a mid-range jump shot.
SG Aquan Smart (Niles North)
This 6’2” shooting guard is a long and athletic slashing wing. Gets to the rack at a consistent clip. Little loose with the ball at times. Snatches rebounds and can make a quick pass in traffic. Should see reserve minutes for a very intriguing Niles North team this year.
