Joppatowne’s Montrell Horsey commits to Drake
2018 Joppatowne/Team Melo point guard Montrell Horsey announced today that he has committed to Drake University. Horsey held offers from the Bulldogs, James Madison and Cal State-Northridge.
Horsey led the Mariners last season to a 20-5 overall record. The 6’2 guard averaged 20 points, four assists, three steals and two blocks per game.
This past Thursday, Horsey went on an official visit to Drake. It didn’t take long to realize that it was the right place for him.
“Drake’s a strong school academically, and the campus was very welcoming,” Horsey told Prep Hoops. It felt like I was apart of a family right away.”
Head Coach Niko Medved and his staff took interest in Horsey’s game and the way he can score the ball. For Horsey, it was important that he would have an opportunity at playing time as a freshman. The Bulldogs will lose four senior guards following this season, so there will be ample opportunities for Horsey to come in and win a spot in the rotation.
This spring/summer, Horsey played with Team Melo’s 17U EYBL team. With his commitment, it brings their total to eight players who have committed to play at the next level. That list consists of:
Anthony Higgs (Perry Hall): Ole Miss
Nate Roberts (Brewster Academy): Washington
Noah Locke (McDonogh): Florida
Brendan Adams (Calvert Hall): Rhode Island
Wynston Tabbs (St. Mary’s Ryken): Boston College
Demetrius Mims (Poly): Long Beach State
Ike Nweke (Georgetown Prep): Columbia
Montrell Horsey (Joppatowne): Drake
