GCL Preseason Preview
The Greater Catholic League has been known for producing some very talented teams in the past. Some make runs deep into the postseason and have knocked off some very talented teams in Dayton. This year, the league is poised to have potentially 2 dark horses compete in Division II. Here is a look at the GCL for 2017-18.
Alter– The Knights are defending champions in the GCL and are coming off a 19-4 season last year. If it weren’t for an upset against Carroll, this Alter team could have very easily made it to the Regional round. This time around it may be difficult for the Knights to repeat as champions. Only one returning senior is back and their scoring is gone too. Connor Bazelak (2019) is the top scorer back and will be the guy to keep an eye on this year.
Carroll– The Patriots finished below .500 last year but a great postseason run was the highlight by far. Eli Ramsey (2018) and TK Robinson (2018) are two of the top returning players for Carroll as they look to be one of the top teams in the GCL this year. Matt Cogan (2019) is a name to watch for.
Chaminade-Julienne– C-J loses some of their top talent from a team that finished 14-11 last year. For years this team has been one of the better schools in the GCL however this year may be more of a rebuilding year. Milton Gage (2019) is the top returning player and is an offensive weapon with serious potential.
Fenwick– The Falcons return 4 of 5 starters from a team that finished 13-11 last year. CJ Napier (2019) is the top returning player and has potential to be GCL Player of the Year. The Falcons have good experience and their potential is through the roof.
Predicted Finish
- Fenwick- The Falcons experience is some of the best in the league. Napier is a star and will be one of the top guys in Dayton.
- Carroll- The Patriots’ record will drastically improve from last year, but besides Ramsey they will need more help in the frontcourt to compete with Fenwick.
- Alter- Although they lose several starters, the Knights have young players with success at the JV and Freshman levels that will carry over.
- Chaminade-Julienne- Gage is by far their top player, but they need more help to compete near the top.
