Florida Top 250 Expo Prospect Report: Wilvens Fleurizard (2018)
2018 Coral Springs guard/forward Wilvens Fleurizard was one of 53 upperclassmen and 86 total prospects in attendance at the Prep Hoops Florida Top 250 Expo on Saturday, Sept. 30th at DME Academy in Daytona Beach.
I sat down with Fleurizard to talk about his time at the expo.
Q: What was your experience like in Daytona at the Prep Hoops Top 250 Expo?
A: My experience at the Prep Hoops Top 250 in Daytona was definitely memorable. Great coaches, an amazing facility it was held at and just great exposure in terms of getting underrated players a place to get their name out but performing at a high level of competition.
Q: Where did you first hear about it?
A: I first heard about the Prep Hoops showcase through Twitter. I was scrolling and I saw the post they tweeted about my close friend Jake Hershkowitz attending. So I came to the conclusion if Jake was willing to drive 3 1/2 half hours it was definitely an event to attend.
Q: What was the best thing you learned?
A: Before we got to the scrimmages, we had a series of different skill works with four great coaches at different stations. Personally, I learned most at the dribbling station. I love to improve my handle at help it get tighter and tighter. He showed me a series of dribble combinations that really enhance my hand coordination. I use what I learned at the camp on a regular routine to get a tighter handle.
Q: What positive in your game grew? What negative in your game did you notice and try to fix?
A: Positively in my game, my leadership grew. Leading my high school team is easy because I know the guys personally. Go to school, hang out etc. Leading a group of people I met on the day and have them listen really showed I possessed the quality to lead and help better others on the court. Whether it was making an unselfish extra pass or screaming midline when the ball was opposite side of the court. Negatively in my game, I sometimes over dribble. I had to learn to trust the other teammates and pass it up early rather than hitting an iso every play.
Q: Would you recommend the expo to your peers? How come?
A: I would definitely recommend the expo because of the exposure and the experience. Prep Hoops is building something I can’t even describe. Helping kids across the state of Florida whether it’s south like kids from me (Broward County) or up north in Jacksonville. Uniting us all through a common love for basketball and helping us attract college interests and potential offers.
Q: What is your role looking like this season?
A: My role on my high school team is essential. I am a crucial piece to my team bring great energy, heavy defense and being our leading scorer. However being a captain my ultimate role is to unite the team and make sure we are a whole rather than a bunch of individuals gathering us to be on the same page. I hope to punch our ticket and be on the big stage in Lakeland.
Fleurizard is a really good kid. He made the most of the expo with constant attacks to the basket and just simple fun while playing the game. The 6’3″ Coral Springs senior is strong and gritty. He’ll certainly make the most of his final high school season for the Colts.
