Florida Top 250 Expo Prospect Report: Cristian Rojas (2020)
2020 Timber Creek guard Cristian Rojas was one of 33 underclassmen and 86 total prospects in attendance at the Prep Hoops Florida Top 250 Expo on Saturday, Sept. 30th at DME Academy in Daytona Beach.
I sat down with Rojas to talk about his time at the expo.
Q: What was your experience like in Daytona at the Prep Hoops Top 250 Expo?
A: My experience at the expo was great. We had a lot of great and challenging drills and warmups. Also, very high intense games and I feel like I played like one of the best players there so it was a successful camp for me.
Q: Where did you first hear about it?
A: I first heard about it through a text I got that I was invited and that I should register. I believed it would be good exposure but also good competition and work for me to go through.
Q: What was the best thing you learned?
A: The best thing that I learned was to not be selfish at the camps us athletes go to. A lot of players believe that if they score 25 and shoot bad shots that it won’t matter because their points make up for it. I learned that sharing the ball with teammates rather than trying to do everything on your own allows you and your team to stand out more.
Q: What positive in your game grew? What negative in your game did you notice and try to fix?
A: I grew more of a leadership role because normally at my high school has a lot of older guys around me or even in AAU playing up when I am not the first option I sit back and let others take over. At this camp I was allowed to run the game and lead my team to do the right things in situations. A negative point in my game that I believe I fixed was over passing. Although it is good to pass to open men there were a lot of opportunities that I had to easily score and I gave it up to make it harder on my team but by the last game I was sharing the ball but finishing when I had to and scoring when my team needed it.
Q: Would you recommend the expo to your peers? How come?
A: I would definitely recommend the camp to other people. It wasn’t a big camp with too many people which is a good thing. A lot of camps that overpopulate don’t let everyone be seen but a smaller camp allows for everyone to be noticed and recognized. The camp was also held in a very nice facility and the coaches and trainers there knew what they were doing and really tried teaching all that they could to us.
Q: What is your role looking like this season?
A: So far I am not completely sure of my role but as of summer I was playing varsity point guard for Timber Creek at a couple of our summer league games. I hope to remain a varsity point guard and help my team play to our best ability with me on the court.
Rojas hit jumpers at a high clip at the expo. He plays a quietly smart game and makes the players around him better. Timber Creek would be wise to let him handle the rock more often than not during his sophomore campaign.
