Best of Best: 2019 Shooters
In our series “Best of the Best” we look at a specific aspect of a prospects game and evaluate who are the best at that specific thing across the state. Today we look at the best 2019 Perimeter Shooters in Illinois.
SG Perry Cowan (DePaul Prep)
Cowan is one of the more intriguing 2019 prospects regardless of position with his upside and smooth game. The area he shoots it best from is actually the mid-range. He is at his best when he can get in the 15-18 foot range and shoot pull up jumpers.
SF Martin Macenis (Stagg)
Macenis is a wing with a European type game along with quality size for position. His height along with elevation off the floor allows him to get his shot from three off against almost any defender.
SF Ethan Helwig (Metea Valley)
Helwig is a prospect that emerged this summer and his jump shot was a major reason. The 6’4” Metea Valley small forward showed with the Illinois Stars he was an effective shooter from both mid-range and three. Likes running into pull up jumpers in transition.
SG Dajuan Gordon (Curie)
Gordon is a smooth shooting guard that will emerge this season for Curie. Long and rangy wing can flat out shoot it from deep! We saw him put on a show in Minnesota at Battle at the Lakes.
SF CJ Benton (De La Salle)
Benton is trending as a guy that excels at spot up perimeter shooting. Good frame and projectability.
SF Keenan Jones (Whitney Young)
Jones looks to be a 3 and D guy that should make noise for the Dolphins this year. The lefty can really shoot it off the catch from wings and corners.
SF Landon Wolfe (Effingham)
Wolfe is an underrated prospect that has toughness, strength, and can really let it fly. Plus shooter from both three and mid-range.
SG Justin Harmon (Curie)
Harmon is a two guard with range on his jump shot. Plus shot from three point especially off the catch.
SG Justin Eagins (Downers Grove South)
Like this 6’2” lefty’s ability to get his jump shot off especially working well around screens.
PG Zach Toussiant (Johsburg)
Toussaint is called the Baby Faced Assassin for a reason! He is in his comfort zone as soon as he crosses half court.
PG Treye Tucker (Harlem)
Tucker is a flashy point guard that has a great feel for creating his own shot. Plays with a lot of Jason “White Chocolate” Williams to his game. Takes and make some tough jumpers.
PG Antonio Reeves (Kenwood)
Reeves is a plus shooter that has range on his shot. Best as a spot up shooter with a quick release off the catch.
SG Teon Nesbitt (Butler Prep)
Nesbitt put himself on our radar this summer with his shooting for the Chicago Demons. Only 6’1” and a bit of a streaky shooter, but can get really hot from deep at times.
SG Austin Gates (Bartlett)
Gates is a 2019 prospect that has shown he is a sound perimeter shooter. Like how he shot it from three with Mercury Elite.
PG Sean Houpt (Danville)
Houpt is a tough combo guard that is mostly known for his defense, but can also connect shooting it. Good stop and pop in the mid-range and can also shoot it from three off the catch.
SG Malcolm Miller (Shelbyville)
Miller is a 6’4” wing that projects as a shooter with size. Got scorching hot in one game we evaluated late in July in Kansas.
G Nick Kosich (York)
Kosich is another player that showed his jumper off in July. Our staff was on hand for his shooting display in Milwaukee where we didn’t think he would miss.
PG Matas Masys (Willowbrook)
Masys is a smaller point guard that is best at letting it fly from deep. Had a very strong spring shooting from three.
PG Fred Cleveland (Leo)
Cleveland is a tiny point guard, but has major range on his shot. Range stretches to well beyond the three point arc.
PG Malik Tidwell (Marian Catholic)
Tidwell is a compact point guard that plays with a lot of toughness. He is also a quality shooter. That is especially shown on the high school scene for Marian Catholic.
PG Davis Belford (Hersey)
Belford broke out with his shooting at a PrepHoops Camp and has continued it from there.
PG Jaxson Dian (Lemont)
Dian was also a prospect that broke out at a PrepHoops Camp with his perimeter shooting.
SG Robert Hubbard (Loyola)
Hubbard was lights out in Minnesota when we saw him playing up a year for Full Package on the 17U level.
