The Basketball Interview with Michael Schaefer
Augustana bound Michael Schaefer is set to join one of the best D2s in the nation, is hoping to leading Cathedral to a title, and today talked with Prep Hoops for The Basketball Interview
At your school, what is your favorite part or parts about game days in terms of the routine leading up to the game?
MS: I prepare for every game by eating with my teammates, and then I like to take a quick nap before the game
What makes your crowd unique? What is a memorable thing that they’ve done that you will always remember?
MS: They are always the most hyped when a JV player scores at the end of the varsity game and everyone goes crazy. We have great fans who support us all season long
Who is the toughest player you can recall playing against in Minnesota basketball and why?
MS: Trae Berhow was the toughest player I’ve played against because he is so versatile, I also got to practice against him for 3 years with Powerhouse Hoops basketball.
Who is your biggest rival and what about them makes the rivalry both heated and memorable?
MS: Melrose is our biggest rivalry matchup. We had a memorable year last year losing to them twice in the regular season, and ending their perfect season in the section finals to go to State.
Who is your favorite basketball player in the world and why?
MS: I like Russell Westbrook because he can impact the game in so many different ways. He is also tough and is a unique type of player for his position.
What court that you haven’t played on would you dream of playing on?
MS: Madison Square Garden because of all the amazing games that have been played there over time.
Explain the relationship varsity players have at your school with youth players?
MS: We stay very involved in their lives. We run camps and workouts for the youth kids. We also ref the PAA games that take place Saturday morning in the Winter.
Best coaching advice you’ve received is what and who was it from?
MS: My AAU coaches saying it’s a “dog eat dog world”. This phrase stuck with me and helps me play assertive and hard all the time.
Who is your basketball influence?
MS: Definitely my dad. He coached high school basketball when I was younger and also played in college. He coached me in travel basketball from third to eighth grade so that’s where I really learned how to play the game.
