Ayo Dosunmu to Illini
Morgan Park 2018 point guard Ayo Dosunmu has been the top prospect in his class for years. The star of the state’s class has made his college commitment. Dosunmu will play his college basketball at Illinois.
He spoke about deciding between Illinois and Wake Forest.
“It was tough. I made the decision about three days ago maybe. I felt when I came back from Illinois it was between Illinois and Wake Forest. Coach Manning is a hall of fame coach. Him and coach Jones recruited me tough. It was great to have more than one choice. I thank God that I could only choose one and I chose to stay home. There were so many pros and cons, but at the end of the day I had a chance to build my legacy and do it here. I think I am the best point guard in the country. There is no way to prove it better than in my home state.”
When did the Illini coaching staff find out?
“He just found out like you guys.”
He talked about what stood out about coach Brad Underwood and the Illini’s fit for him.
“I liked him first when he told me he wanted to score in 7 seconds. It is intriguing to know you can score that fast. To see how he got Jawun Evans to the league in two years. I see myself in that vision in one, but if it is two so be it. I think he can get me to the next level. He told me I will have the ball right away. I will play right away and I could be one of the most played freshman in minutes. We sat there and talked about a lot of things. I visited the Illinois campus three or four times. I always liked it even when coach Groce was there. Coach Underwood took it over the hump.”
Teaming up with last year’s Mr. Basketball Mark Smith in the backcourt was a big selling point.
“I think it can be scary. He was the main one on the visit playing 2k saying ‘you gotta come to Illinois. You gotta come to Illinois.’ He said we could be the best backcourt. He has my back and I have his back. I want to bring the good days back at Illinois and be one of the cornerstones to start it off.”
No worries about him not signing in November. Dosunmu says his recruitment is over.
“I am big on loyalty. I am committed to Illinois now, forever, and 100% in.”
What more can be said that we haven’t already talked about with the top prospect in the senior class? Dosunmu is an electric lead guard with size for position at 6’4” and the ability to get to the rim at will! He has a smooth and explosive first step that allows him to get to the rim where he finishes better than anyone in the state making layups. Big time speed in the open floor and makes an impact on the defensive end as well. Sound pull up mid-range shooter that can stop and pop on a dime. Improved his passing ability and floor vision throughout the summer. Fierce competitor and leader on the floor! Others want to follow this guy. Dosunmu is a five star national recruit.
He made a statement with his play on the Nike EYBL circuit this past spring where he ranked fourth in the entire country in scoring at 23.2 points per game on 47.8% shooting from the field. Also racked up 3.9 rebounds and 3.1 dimes per contest. Dosunmu is the #1 overall prospect in the PrepHoopsIllinois 2018 Rankings and the prohibited favorite for Mr. Basketball this upcoming season. As Ayo Would Say “#WhyNotMe?”
