5A has a number of skilled guards who are capable of impacting games in a huge way. Below is our point guard watch list which includes some of the most talented guards in the state. Keep an eye on this group and their ability to impact the outcome of games.
5A: Point Guard Watch List
Marcel Dean 5’11 2018 Cholla
Dean will do a little bit of everything for Cholla this year. He is the primary playmaker and the ball will be in his hands almost every possession. Dean’s ability to create for himself as well as his teammates is the key to Cholla’s success this season. Dean proved that he is capable of playing this role last year.
Dominic Mooney, Jr. 5’11 2018 Buena
Mooney is one of the most talented point guards in the state and has managed to fly relatively under the radar. His toughness and gritty play style enable him to get anywhere he wants to get on the court. Further, it creates a culture of toughness throughout the rest of the team. Moreover, he is elusive and a capable shooter as well.
Drew Cotton 6’3 2018 Mountain View Marana
Cotton is another prospect who has gone largely under the radar despite having NCAA Division-1 offers. Cotton has a really solid feel for the game. Further, he is quite athletic which enables him to do an array of things on the offensive and defensive end. He will run the back court for Mountain View this year and will need to be solid for them to win games.
Jordan Green 6’2 2018 Cienega
Green is a lengthy pass first point guard. His teammates benefit greatly off of his high IQ. He has a tremendous feel for where his teammates want the basketball and gets it to them on time and on target. His passing and understanding of his teammates’ skill sets make him a point guard to watch.
Tashon Brown 6’2 2018 Paradise Valley
Brown should have been on people’s point guard watch list long before now. He has earned varsity playing time for one of the most consistent programs in the state for the last 3 years. Brown might be the best point guard and player in his region. His ability to score the basketball and create make him a tough match-up.
Josh Ursery 6’1 2019 Liberty
Ursery is a confident shooter with a lot of explosion. He is not afraid of taking big shots and can get into a deadly rhythm quickly. His shooting abilities mixed with his elite athleticism make him quite dangerous. Ursery was a standout last year at Valley Vista. He now plays in a program that thrives on creating turnovers and opportunities. Expect a big year from Ursery.
Deven Breckner 6’1 2018 Deer Valley
Like a number of guards on this list, Breckner is not a new name to the point guard watch list. He has played meaningful minutes for Deer Valley since his freshman year. He has always been one of the most fundamentally sound players in the state. Now, his body is starting to catch up as he hit his growth spurt this summer.
DJ McNeal 5’11 2018 Agua Fria
Although Bryce Fowler earned a lot of attention, McNeal was huge to this team’s success. His ability to set the tempo, knock down shots from deep, and put teammates in the right spots, makes him one of the top point guards in this classification. He will have a much harder job now that Fowler is gone. However, he is talented and more than capable of taking on an even bigger role.
Tyrese Eugene 6’0 2018 Ironwood
Eugene will be a three year starter at Ironwood and is capable of having a big time season. He is strong and able to create for himself at will. His slashing mixed with his ability to shoot it from deep make him hard for the defense to stay in front of. Moreover, he has a good feel for the game and finds his teammates well.
Josh Johnson 5’7 2018 Maricopa
Johnson is a phenomenal scorer despite his size. His toughness and ability to hit difficult shots is incredible. He is one of the most dangerous point guards in the state due to his ability to impact the game in so many ways. In order for Maricopa to have the kind of season they are wanting to have, he will need to continue his scoring.
Bryson Mewhinney 5’11 2018 Sunnyslope
Mewhinney runs the show for Sunnyslope. His length and ability to create off of the dribble puts the defense in stressful situations constantly. Mewhinney is going to be one of the big keys for Sunnyslope’s success this season. If he can continue to apply solid on ball pressure and attack the paint in a way that forces help side to rotate, Sunnyslope will have a lot of success this season.
