Way Too Early Rankings: 5A
There are a number of talented teams in 5A. However, with this newly aligned group, there are a couple of players who appear to be at the top of the classification early on. Below are our top 5 as well as a watch list for spots 6-10.
Way Too Early 5A Rankings
1. Olympus
Although Olympus will lose two of their leading scorers from last year and move up to 5A, they bring back plenty of talent. Rylan Jones, who will be going in to his junior year, will be one of the players running the show. Jones recently committed to Utah and is one of the best point guards in the state. He has a great feel for the game and understands how to get his teammates involved while being a constant scoring threat. One of Jones’ biggest beneficiaries will be fellow junior Jeremy Dowdell. If all things state intact, this group that played for the state championship last year should have the opportunity to win a couple on the backs of Jones and Dowdell.
2. Jordan
Like the majority of the other teams on this list, Jordan returns the majority of the talent to their team. Further, they demonstrated that they can compete in 5A last year. Moreover, 2020 prospect Dyson Koehler Dyson Koehler 6'7" | SF Jordan | 2020 State #289 Nation UT made a name for himself as he was one of the leading scorers for the team despite his youth. Moreover, the group brings back their leading playmaker Josh Christensen. Christensen lead the team in points and rebounds last year as a junior and will look up to up those totals. Lastly, the group also brings back their second leading scorer and one of their leaders in assists as well as rebounds in Crew Wakley. As if this was not enough, Jordan will have 6’7 Dyson Frank on their roster this season. Frank did not play a lot of minutes this past year at Lone Peak. However, he is potential NCAA Division-I caliber player.
3. Timpview
Timpview was upset in the first round of the state tournament last year by Highland High School. However, Timpview brings back the majority of their team and will most likely bring a renewed focus due to exiting the tournament far earlier than expected. A couple of the key players to watch for Timpview are Nate Hansen and Adam Santiago. In addition to Hansen and Santiago, the group brings back 20+ point per game scorer Hunter Ericson. Ericson is one of the best scorers in the state. Amongst these three, Timpview should be in prime position to have a big season.
4. Timpanogos
On a team that had a lot of upperclassmen, Matt Norman often stole the show despite only being a sophomore. Norman is a big time shooter who had multiple games with 5 or more three pointers. Norman will most likely be even more consistent this upcoming season after a solid year of varsity basketball under his belt. Further, Derik Eaquinto will bring good size and length to the wing as well as an ability to shoot it from deep. Lastly, Tyler Walker will bring a physical presence in the paint and even more length to the group. Timpanogos should be ready for a big season on the backs of these three despite being new to 5A.
5. Viewmont
Although talented Lewis Johnson is gone, Viewmont will still be solid in this upcoming season. They will bring back Josh Mordue who is more than capable of extending the floor due to his shooting abilities. In addition to Mordue, they have one of the best stretch fours in the state in Chandler Cox. The 6’7 big man is more than capable of hitting from deep and provides length on the defensive end. Make no mistake about it, this group will have a lot of production to replace. It will be interesting to see which role players step up and play a big role for the group.
