Way Too Early Rankings: 3A
Much like 2A, the realignment of 3A has changed the scope greatly. With some of the top teams moving from 3A up to 4A, this division looks relatively open. Judge Memorial makes the step down from 4A to 3A and is the early favorite. However, South Sevier and Summit Academy are right on their heels and should be prepared to make a run for the state championship.
3A Rankings
1. Judge Memorial
Judge was a tough pick at this spot due to the amount of talent they lost. However, with the bounce back from 4A to 3A, they will have more success than they did last year. Historically, Judge has always had solid basketball teams at the 3A level and they will do so here. As far as returners who are worth watching, keep an eye on increased production from some of their skilled 2019 prospects who earned great experience on the varsity level. In addition, Parker Edington will have to continue playing a big role for them to have success. Edington does a great job of finishing around the rim and being active on the glass. His ability to play big minutes while the new starting cast gets their feet wet will be pivotal.
2. South Sevier
South Sevier returns a lot of talent and has had a solid program for a number of years. However, it will be interesting to see how they adjust to life at the 3A level. With that said, they will have their three leading scorers from last season back to help them make the transition. Caleb Barton brings a lot of value to this team at the guard spot as he is a walking double-double who can score in a hurry. In addition, Brodee Tebbs will be responsible for running the show and putting his teammates in a position to be successful. Lastly, watch out for Tyson Chisholm who will be returning as a junior who will be more comfortable at the varsity level. This team has a lot of potential to be very dangerous.
3. Summit Academy
Summit Academy had a very strong season last year and brings back a plethora of talent from that group. Isaiah Green will be a crucial member of the team for this upcoming season due to his court vision and ability to put his teammates in the right spots. In addition to Green, Jay Gilson provides length and activity on the glass. The big man averaged a near double-double last season for Summit. Lastly, Nick Maness was a knock down shooter last year who will hope to do the same this season. His ability to extend the floor with his shooting will be key to this group’s success.
4. Grantsville
Grantsville had a solid season last year and they will rely heavily on Brady Arbon as well as Kevin Roberts. Arbon will look to be a presence in the paint who assists Grantsville in winning the rebounding battles. Further, Roberts will be a knock down shooter who will need to create more for himself and others. This group has plenty of returning talent and could easily be argued to be in the number 2 spot going into the season.
5. Morgan
It is always nice to enter the season with your returning leading scorer. Especially when he is capable of scoring the basketball like Cade Russell. Morgan had a hard time pulling out wins last season. However, with the realigned 3A and Russell returning, this team should not lack confidence. There is a lot of potential for them to have success at this level. I would not be surprised to see a much improved Morgan team this season.
