Iowa Top 250 Expo: Top 2018/2019 Guards (Part II)
Evan Obia , 6′ 2019 (Valley)
Valley has yet another trick up its sleeve with this ultra-talented junior point guard. Obia had been largely held under wraps, but had a big coming out party last weekend at Kingdom Courts. He’s fast, athletic, and skilled in so many ways. He’d be a sure-fire starter and standout at most any other school in Iowa, but we know by now that Valley is a different animal when it comes to depth. Obia will make a high debut in the coming 2019 updated rankings.
Isaac Prewitt, 6’2, 2018 (Des Moines Christian)
We certainly expected Prewitt to be good at the Expo, we didn’t necessarily expect him to can seven 3s during a 10 minute stretch of live-game action. Shooting is definitely Prewitt’s strength, and he adds some nice passing and ball-handling with that. With Ben Juhl graduated, it will be Prewitt’s team to run this year at Des Moines Christian. Look for him to have big-time season.
Zach Lester, 6′ 2018 (Clear Lake)
We got our first glimpse of this Clear Lake athlete last May at the Prep Hoops Battle at the Lakes in Minneapolis, and came away quite impressed. Those big numbers he put up last season were no fluke; Lester is as quick as they come, and has some nice leaping ability. He was one of the best finishers we saw around the rim, and certainly one of the best and most clever finishers at the rim in Iowa.
Bryce Barnett, 6’1 2019 (Regina)
One of the coaches at the Expo gave us a tip that Barnett was a guy to watch, and they wee right. He was impressive in the skills segment, using his nice length and quickness to routinely torch those he was matched against. We’ve seen him improve greatly over the past season, and the Regals should see him greatly improve upon his 1.9 points per game from a season ago.
Bo Sandquist, 5’11 2018 (Johnston)
We’ve said it once and we’ll say it again: Sandquist is one of the best shooters in Iowa. He did nothing to make us think otherwise last weekend. He’s grown a bit, and is almost up to 6-foot, and he’s able to get his precise shot off the bounce — Steph Curry style. The coach’s son will get a chance to shine this season at Johnson.
Logan Peters, 6’2 2019 (South Hamilton)
Great length and an aggressive nature made this South Hamilton junior a treat to watch. He never settles for the outside shot, even though he’s a capable outside shooter. And why should he? That great length and a quick first step make him tough to stay in front of. He’ll get a lot of buckets at the rim the next two seasons for the Hawks.
Jordan Lake, 6′ 2018 (Epworth, Wesrtern Dubuque)
After a serious leg injury kept Lake out all of last season, it was nice to see him back and able to make major impacts against some of the state’s best competition last weekend. When we saw him in the spring with the Martin Brothers, it looked as though he was still trying to get his footing. But he’s back, and college coaches should be taking notice.
Trent Williamson, 6’2, 2018 (Earlham)
No surprise here as Williamson was one of Iowa’s most dominant sophomores last season with Earlham, and he showed why last Saturday. He’s a big and strong off-guard. The skills are there. And the good size will make him very tough to contain the next two seasons. D2s and NAIAs might want to get in on Williamson now.
