Team Preview: Greene Central High School
In the 2016-2017 season, Greene Central put the state of North Carolina on notice and made it clear that they are a force to be reckoned with. One of the more exciting teams in eastern North Carolina, Greene Central came out of the gates on fire and finished with a 27-2 overall record before falling to the eventual state champions in the regional finals. Despite the graduation of double-double machine Don Pigford who is currently at Mt. Olive University, Coach Harris will still boast a formidable lineup with good pieces from top to bottom.
They will return a rather deep back-court. Senior point guard DonQuez Davis who was one of the top floor generals in the state as a junior will head the charge again. Senior guard Rhaheem Edwards will look to continue adding scoring and timely plays. Torrance Clark will arguably be their best defender on the wing while also being a formidable scoring option offensively with his improved body and jump-shot.
Adding depth to the back-court will be sophomore guards Bobby “BJ” Corbitt and Kentrell Suggs, who were two of the main reasons that the Greene Central junior varsity team went undefeated this past season. Corbitt adds stability at the point guard position as well as the athleticism and potential to make momentum changing plays. Suggs will add outstanding shooting ability from the perimeter with a consistent jump-shot and good length at 6’3”. Also note that 6’2” junior guard Hysaan Hudson will also add shooting ability to a deeper back-court.
Last but not least, the front-court will have some added depth as well. Imajae Dodd, a highly productive and uber athletic 6’7” junior forward is the returning player of the year in his area. He holds several division 1 offers and is sure to garner more along the way. Donte Johnson is no slouch in his own right. He’s a left handed 6’5” do it all junior forward that also has the ability to dominate a game on any given night.
In addition to Dodd & Johnson, 6’5” junior forward Tayon Edwards could possibly provide important minutes for the front-court. He’s got good size and strength on the block and finishes well inside. Really uses his body well to rebound the ball and score in the post.
Word of advice to any fans or coaches that plan to make a trip to check out this team this season. Leave the house early. This team wins basketball games,is filled with college prospects for every level and they sell out games really fast.
