Surging Sophomores: Part 1 (Free)
North Carolina is seemingly always stacked with great basketball talent. Several rising sophomores really stood out last year and proved themselves to be worth taking note.
Auldon Edwards is a crafty lefty that plays with a ton of confidence. Had a fantastic freshman campaign that saw him average over 15 points per game including a 29 point outburst against rival school Reidsville. Off the dribble, he loves to drive hard left and pull up for the mid-range jumper. Does a good job mixing it up inside as well and banging on the block. He plays with a chip on his shoulder and doesn’t back down from challenges. Fun player to watch and will only become more exciting over time as his in-between game grows.
It’s a fair statement to say Isaiah Bess was one of the most underrated freshmen in the state last year. Playing at Burns HS, he averaged around 13 points, 6 rebounds & 3 assists. Was a very reliable shooting option from outside. Can’t be left open. Rebounds very well for a guard prospect too. He’s a two sport star, so it’s only fitting that his athleticism is trending upward. Definitely one to watch as the season rolls around.
This combo guard from Charlotte has a nice mixed bag of tricks off of the dribble. Tremaine Lowery nearly scored at will on the junior varsity level with quick crossover moves, hesitations and counter dribbles. Quickly became one of the better scorers after being called up to the varsity team as a freshman, reeling off several double digit scoring games. Doesn’t force the issue much off the dribble either. Very efficient, getting all the way to the rim most times with just a few dribbles. Should he continue growing and develop more explosiveness, he’ll have the potential to be a high scoring guard sooner than later at the high school level.
