Recruiting Update: Jonathan Mpanzu (2018)
The last time I spoke with Stebbins wing Jonathan Mpanzu (2018), he was a heavily recruited player from multiple D2 and D3 colleges. Now, Jonathan has informed us he is receiving interest from not one but two Division 1 programs currently. Mpanzu has proven he is a crucial player for any team and that his ceiling is quite high as to where he can play at.
Jonathan has multiple schools recruiting him currently, but named 5 specific schools that currently are recruiting him hardest. From our previous talks, Findlay, Goshen College, and Wheeling Jesuit are still near the top of his list. The other two teams however are the new D1 programs, Youngstown State and Marshall. Both are new to the scene for Mpanzu and although they are his first D1 interest, his recruitment is still wide open and can go any direction at this point.
Mpanzu credits the increased exposure to his strong showing at the AAU circuit this summer.
“I felt like this was a standout summer for me…I got my name out there (to colleges)”.
While playing for Dayton Metro, Mpanzu made a name for himself with his incredible athleticism and great defensive skill, especially protecting the rim. In fact, at Prep Hoops Top 250 Expo earlier this month, Jonathan impressed multiple people with this incredible athleticism. He would hang in the air for 3-4 seconds before even dunking a ball and did it with such ease.
What make Jonathan such an impressive player is how much of an impact he makes on the teams he play for. With Stebbins last year, he was by far their defensive leader and really made a difference because of this plus his rebounding skill. Jonathan showed great leadership with the Indians, especially leading them through their first year in the GWOC. Considering he also was a first team all-GWOC in their first year in the conference also shows how talented he truly is. He will make a huge impact with whatever school he signs with for 2018-19.
