Recruiting Report: Tymu Chenery (2020)
This summer we witnessed a bunch of key players deciding to transfer schools to continue their high school careers. One of the Baltimore products that joined this list was Tymu Chenery. The former Dunbar Poet decided to transfer to Episcopal High School in Virginia, while also reclassifying to 2020.
The move will certainly be a detriment for Dunbar considering Chenery was one of their key players last season. The 6’6 guard wasn’t a player that came into high school expecting to be a star player. Chenery played his ninth grade year on the junior varsity team. At the beginning of last season, he had to prove himself as a player off the bench. It didn’t take long for the coaching staff to realize they had to insert him in the starting lineup. From there, he took off and finished the season averaging 15 points and four rebounds per game.
Chenery took his development and success and carried it over into the spring/summer playing for Team BBC with players such as two of the top 2018 prospects in the country in Immanuel Quickley and Montez Mathis.
As the high school offseason carried on, Chenery made the decision to transfer to Episcopal.
“It’s just a great situation,” Chenery told PrepHoops. “I really wasn’t looking to leave, they came to me and I just felt like if something like that happens it’s for a reason and I have to take it. It’s a great school and I can use the gym to work out whenever I want.”
Chenery is a long, athletic guard with smooth offensive ability. He’s an effective outside shooter, but shines attacking the basket whether it be the halfcourt or open floor where his length and athleticism can be fully showcased. Defensively, he moves well laterally and can recover for blocked shots if his match up goes by him. He also communicates on the defensive end, which has become a rarity at the high school level. With that all being said, he still many different aspects hat he wants to continue to build on in order to make him a more dynamic player.
“Ball handling,” Chenery claimed as he was talking about offseason improvements. “At Episcopal, I want to get my name out there. I want to score more, get after it on defense and get bigger by getting in the weight room more. I’ve been in the weight room a lot this summer and I’ve seen how it has paid off.”
Chenery has a 3.5 gpa cumulatively and although he has no current offers, Columbia, Cornell, UMass, Brown and Lafayette have shown interest. He’ll be an immediate impact player for Episcopal and has the potential to be a top-ranked player in the area for years to come.
