Recruiting Report: Shemar Morton (2018)
For Dover High School’s 6’1” guard Shemar Morton (2018), senior season of basketball means opportunity. Although Morton is yet to receive a scholarship offer, programs have told him they will come check him out in action.
“I’ve heard from Alderson Broaddus, Slippery Rock, Charleston (WV), West Virginia Tech, and that’s about it for now … A lot of coaches said they are going to be at a lot of my games this year,” Morton told Prep Hoops Ohio.
Morton also mentioned that all of the schools listed above contact him an equal amount. Yet, he plans on visiting a school in West Virginia soon.
“I actually have a visit coming up this September, going to Charleston. But I went to a lot of camps this summer. I went to Lake Erie and Charleston,” Morton said.
As far as college decisions go, Morton will prioritize coach-player relationships, playing time, and academics.
When Morton wasn’t participating in on-campus elite camps this summer, he was playing grassroots basketball for Ohio Unity.
“For Unity, I’m with other good people, so I don’t have to do too much. But for Dover, I have to do more because I’m not around that many good players with my high school team,” Morton said.
Regardless of talent level, Morton is setting goals high for his last season at Dover.
“Team goals, I want to make it as far as Dover has ever been. Dover, we’ve never been to a Final Four. People won’t think that’s possible, [but] I think it’s possible if we just play as a team and stuff like that,” Morton said.
Morton is a physical slasher. He’s unafraid of contact near the rim, as he often sacrifices his body for an and-one opportunity.
“Most other guards, they’ll run away from contact. But me, I’ll go straight into the contact and go straight up; try and get to the free throw line for a foul or an and-one. Being able to jump and be strong helps me guard multiple positions,” Morton said.
Morton clarified that he feels comfortable defending anyone on the perimeter.
He’s been furthering his athleticism lately in the weight room. Also, Morton understands that a more reliable jump shot could push his game to a new level.
“My jump shot is there but it’s got to be consistent. I want to get the pull-up,” Morton said.
As far as academics, Morton has a 2.6 GPA and 17 ACT score. He plans on re-taking the ACT soon and he is doing more preparation this go-round.
