Recruiting Report: Hayden Smithey (2019)
Hayden Smithey – 6’5” | G/W | Indy Heat 16U EYBL | Fort Wayne Bishop Dwenger
Hayden Smithey is a dynamic athlete who has the ability to stretch the floor consistently with the long ball while finishing at an elite level with both hands around the rim. Hayden impressed throughout the spring and summer with his ball handling, and guard like tendencies. He looked comfortable pushing the ball in transition and showed his high basketball IQ with great passes and smart shots.
Hayden just fiunished up his second year on the Nike EYBL Circuit with the Indy Heat program. He was an integral piece in their Final Four appearance at the Peach Jam in July. Smithey is looking to increase his role and impact for the Saints this season as they look to have a solid season in the SAC.
Bishop Dwenger has a special player on their hands. Hayden has experience at the varsity level, on the EYBL Circuit against some of the best in the nation, and is a student of the game. He always looks to improve upon his skill set to be a versatile player.
After the AAU season ended in late July, Smithey has been busy. He’s been to Northern Illinois University, IPFW, and Colgate University. These are all tacked on to interest from a growing list of schools. Hayden will continue to see his list grow and his recruiting take off if he continues down the path that he is currently on.
Smithey has a good frame for a guard. With his length and athleticism, he can finish above the rim, make tough passes, and cause havoc on the defensive end. He is developing into a high impact, two-way player.
He’s also been in the gym working on his game before getting back after it with his Bishop Dwenger team. “I’ve been working on my quickness in decision making, my lateral quickness and overall defensive abilities, rebounding, strength, and being consistent with my offense.” As Smithey adds strength to his frame, he will have an even greater impact on the backboards than he already does. He is one of the better rebounding guards in the Class of 2019.
As Smithey and the Saints get started with their workouts soon, they will be a team that will turn a few heads. Hayden will be a leader of this group this season and has all the pieces in place to have a breakout junior season. Keep an eye on him as he looks to build off his strong spring and summer campaign.
