Recruiting Report: Garrett Denbow (2019)
As a sophomore, Garrett Denbow (2019) earned District 6 Second Team Honors. But, entering the upperclassmen ranks will come with much more responsibility for Ashland High School.
“Last year for Ashland, I was more of shooter … But this year, I’ll have a much bigger role on the team. The whole offense is going to run through me,” Denbow said.
Denbow’s skill set is dynamic enough that an entire offense can thrive if designed around him. He scored at all three levels for OH-NOVA (Bennett) this summer, for example.
At the moment, mostly Division II programs have taken notice of the 6’5 ½” 2-guard prospect.
“I have had interest from Ashland, Findlay, Malone, Mount Vernon Nazarene,” Denbow said.
There have also been murmurs of low Division I programs keeping tabs on Denbow.
“They’re all just talking right now. I haven’t really visited or anything. I obviously have knowledge of Ashland University. But yeah, I’m just waiting on everyone to contact me and I’ll feel them out once I get a better grasp on the colleges,” Denbow said.
Denbow has taken wisdom from his brother Grant, a 2017 high school graduate who is playing football for Ashland University, on how to navigate the recruitment process.
“He’s gone through it all. He had some Division I interest and stuff. He just told me to focus on the best fit, it’s not always about the bigger school,” Denbow explained.
But, what defines “fit” for the younger Denbow?
“I’d say it’s a mixture of the relationships around me and then academics. The coaching staff is a big one too. And then, just the program basketball wise.”
Denbow will surely continue drawing interest from college programs going forward. He’s constantly working on strength and quickness, in order to become a better finisher.
During the interview, it was clear that he is focused on the upcoming high school, where he plans on building upon last season’s success.
“I believe we had a record of 15-8 [last year]. And, I’m hoping to have a better record this year and make a run in the playoffs.”
