Recruiting Report: Cal Wright (2018)
Finding guys who willingly play and excel in different roles is a big key when it comes to putting together successful grassroots teams. Cal Wright is an easy guy to plug into practically any situation because he can do a lot.
Wright, a 6-foot-3 guard from Mora, spent the grassroots season with Comets Servaty where he made the adjustment from being the surefire go-to guy on his high school team to a valuable defender and secondary scorer. It took Wright a little while to find his groove on the offensive end but he carved out a niche as an ace defender.
“I definitely feel like I improved a lot from the start,” Wright said. “I kind of started finding my rhythm offensively later in the season. I was still kind of a go-to guy on defense trying to lock up the other team’s best player and I started getting more aggressive offensively so I felt good about how I was playing especially at the end. Really just doing whatever I can to make an impact.”
Comets Servaty played against great competition practically every weekend and the opportunity to go against elite players that often was beneficial for everybody.
“Things happen so fast and you get used to playing through a lot of physicality,” Wright said. “I definitely got better at driving to the rim and finishing. I feel like I play a lot quicker and more explosive now because that’s how you have to play. There aren’t a lot of fouls called and the game is fast-paced and physical. It really makes you better.”
Because he can do so much, it’s easy to see how Wright could fit into just about any team at the college level. He has no shortage of suitors.
“I think I’ve got it narrowed down to a few colleges here,” said Wright. “I’m really interested in Bethel, St. Johns and Concordia Moorhead. They are all very nice. Beautiful campuses and I’m hoping to go to Pre-Med in college and they have great programs. So I’m excited. I’m not 100 percent certain yet and I’m not sure when I’ll have a decision made by. I’m going to take some more visits and weigh some more options. I have some time still but I’m excited.”
