Prospect Watch: Canaan Fagerland (2019)
Standing 5-foot-9, 170 pounds from Shiloh Christian is Canaan Fagerland, one of the top three sport athletes in North Dakota’s junior class.
Canaan was a key piece to last year’s strong Shiloh basketball season. He plays running back and middle linebacker on the football team. His spring and summer is split between many baseball games and playing some with the ECI Prospects.
“I also play baseball during the summer so I was an alternate for the 16u ECI team and honestly I feel that just being able to play with that kind of talent was the highlight of the season,” Canaan said.
“Just being able to play at that caliber and with the great guys I play with was definitely a highlight. I definitely feel I improved over the summer. The workouts that Luke Moorman puts on really help and just improve on the little things.
“I think the most I improved on was passing and ball-handling skills. And obviously just playing the kind of competition that I played at helped to improve as well.”
Fagerland was appreciative of the ECI experience and now he’s playing football. Basketball is a couple months away and when the season starts Canaan wants his wind to be ready.
“I think just staying conditioned and in shape before the season gets here so that I don’t have to push as hard or get as tired when the season starts,” Fagerland said.
Shiloh Christian has huge expectations this winter. Bartholomew Ogbu, Jonas Mitzel, and Macauley Young are all returning key pieces from a team that won a lot of games.
“I think we’re looking great,” Canaan said of the upcoming year. “With all of the experience and chemistry coming back it will be a very fun year. You know with everyone being able to come back healthy and ready to go, I think we could for sure go a long way this year.”
Canaan has only received initial contact from colleges so far as it is early but schools have called about his football and baseball abilities.
“I haven’t heard from any basketball programs yet. And there are a few for other sports but not much at this point.”
Fagerland has learned a lot playing winter, spring, and summer with his 6-foot-9 fellow junior center.
“Playing with Macauley Young has really helped with passing into the post for sure,” said Fagerland.
