Prospect Watch: Amorey Womack (2019)
Class of 2019 guard Amorey Womack of Webster Groves has continued to improve to the point where he has become a very potent scoring threat.
The 6’0″ Womack entered high school as a very undersized and very athletic small forward, but three years later he has developed into a high-scoring shooting guard with a healthy taste for getting buckets. He is a physical performer who uses his strength to get to the basket, but can also knock down mid-range jumpers and 3-pointers.
“The key to my improvement has been staying in the gym and more importantly, just working on my IQ as a point guard,” Womack said. “My strengths are getting to the basket. I believe I’m one of the quickest guards out there and I can get by anybody. My mid range jumper is just as deadly so if people play my drive, I can pull up for a mid-range jumper.
Womack played his sophomore year at Maplewood where he enjoyed a breakout season. He averaged 16 points, 6.4 rebounds, 3.1 assists and made 45 3-pointers. He shots 44 percent from the field and 75 percent from the free throw line. Womack had some big scoring nights against some excellent teams during the season. He scored 26 points against Class 3 state finalist Whitfield, 24 points against Class 4 contender St. Mary’s, 25 points against Lutheran North and 27 points against McCluer South-Berkeley.
Womack has since transferred to Webster Groves, where he will become another important piece in the Statesmen’s chase to repeat as Class 5 state champions. He spent the summer playing up at the 17U level with the Missouri Impact for former Indiana University legend and NBA standout Calbert Cheaney.
“Playing up at 17U helped me tremendously,” he said. “My confidence grew a lot and it showed me that I can play with anybody no matter the age level. I learned a lot by playing for a legend like Calbert Cheaney. My goals for the upcoming summer is to be recognized as one of the best players in my class. I’m hoping to get on the EYBL circuit and show me talent.”
