Prospect Spotlight: Colin Smalls (2020)
If you haven’t heard of Colin Smalls until now, there’s a good chance you will hear of him at least a few more times before the end of the upcoming season. The sophomore, who played a key role on a 36-6 15U Team Durant team this summer, has made the switch from Wise to St. Andrew’s Episcopal, and is excited to show what he can do in the upcoming season.
“This will be my first actual chance to play at the high school level,” said Smalls, who was on the varsity roster as a freshman at Wise, but took a back seat to more experienced players. “I learned that high shcool is different from AAU. Every one is good in AAU.”
The makeup of Wise last season, and St. Andrews this season is very different. The Pumas had eight seniors a year ago, and this year the Lions have just two. Smalls admits that everyone is still learning and trying to get better in preparation for the season.
“My role will be that of a floor general. Get everyone in their spots,” said Smalls, a native of Upper Marlboro. “Create open shots for others, maybe knock down a few shots.”
Conditioning is a major area of focus for Smalls at the moment. He’s also been working to improve the consistency on his mid range shot, and creating more space off the dribble. As a point guard, Smalls understands the importance of being effective in ball screen situations, and is also currently enhancing that area of his game. What can we expect from Smalls throughout the season?
“I think I can bring energy on the defensive end, and more outside shooting.”
