Prospect Spotlight: Andrew Curran (2019)
Last season, Ottumwa guard Andrew Curran made his mark on Iowa high school hoops by leading his 4A Bulldogs in scoring as a sophomore.
And despite his team finishing just 6-16 last season, this season, the 5-foot-10 guard has high hopes for himself and his team.
We recently caught up with Curran, who defined his skill-set and what he’s been working on this summer.
“As a player I’d probably say my strengths would be just scoring off the dribble, creating for others, and just kind of controlling the game a little bit,” he said.
“I classify myself as a point guard, I like getting others in involved and playing that way.”
He spent his spring and summer playing with a small grassroots program, Southern Iowa Thunder, in mostly MAYB tournaments.
But he’ll get a boost in exposure next spring and summer after trying out and making the Iowa Barnstormers 17U team.
“Most of my summer just consisted of me getting better. And then I recently tried out for the Barnstormers and they asked me to come play with them,” said Curran.
“It’s a great opportunity to play with a team like that. I’ll get to play all over and play with different guys and better guys. It’s a good opportunity, and I’m excited for it.”
After his successful sophomore season and 16U season with the Thunder, Curran was able to generate a little bit of small school recruitment.
“As far as recruitment goes, I haven’t really had any. I’ve been invited to a couple camps, like the William Penn and Augustana ones,” said Curran.
“But I’m not rushing it, I’m not too worried. I’m just going to let it come to me and hope for the best.”
With still two seasons left for his recruitment to materialize, it’s his junior season that’s most important to Curran right now. And he’s optimistic.
“This year, I think it’s going to be a lot different. We didn’t have a very good year last year. This year, I’ll be more of a leader, and more of the guy,” said Curran.
“We’ll win a lot more games, and we have a lot of guys that really like to play basketball. So, it’ll be a better environment, and we’ll hopefully have a better season.”
