Prospect Spotlight 2019: Jamal Muhammad
We scouted Jamal & his twin brother Jibril at the DMV Elite 80 in Bowie, MD on 9-10-17. The twins were very impressive & this report is for Jamal, with Jibril to follow in the next few days. All purpose guards and twin brothers Jamal (White team) and Jibril (Orange team) Muhammad showed they belong amongst the group of elite guards in attendance. The 2019 prospects from Archbishop Carroll HS (DC) showed flashes of what’s to come this winter in WCAC play. Jibril consistently put on ball pressure defense on the opposing point guards coming up with multiple steals which led to easy lay-ups and dunks for himself and his teammates. He also showed that he can knock down the open 3 and find teammates on the wings with his ability to penetrate and kick out for open jumpers. Jamal showed that he was unguardable, easily getting by defender’s and finishing at rim with contact or dishing to cutters. Look out for a breakout year for these two with the arrival of a new Head Coach and talented players at Archbishop Carroll. Jamal Muhammad, 5’11”, PG, 2019. Archbishop Carroll Lions HS. Washington, DC.
Grassroots Team: MD Movement 16U
Jamal is a pass first lefty PG who earned honorable mention WCAC last season as a sophomore at Archbishop Carroll HS. He has developed an excellent chemistry with his twin brother Jibril, 6’10” rising 2020 Tegra Izay & 6’4″ 2021 newcomer SF Aminu Mohammed The Lions will be a much improved team in WCAC this season under 1st year Head Coach Mike Powell.
We are very impressed with Jamal’s skill-set & that he can impact the game without scoring. He plays with a very high IQ always keeping his head up & reads the court very well. Jamal is a downhill PG, with a very advanced handle. He possesses an excellent assortment of ball handling moves which include an in & out crossover, hesitation & go, spin moves, & a behind the back step back. Jamal protects the ball very well with both hands & does net get stripped. He does a great job of dictating the game tempo & finding his open teammates. Jamal makes the correct pass very quickly on the move & can deliver full court passes, kick outs, post feeds, drop offs & kick outs with great precision. He has a nice change of pace move & burst which allows him to beat full court on ball pressure. Jamal splits double teams very well & can get to any spot on the floor.
Last season Jamal was Archbishop Carroll’s Team MVP averaging 12 points, 6 assists & steals per game. He attacks the rim very fast off the dribble & finishes with array of moves from both sides of the floor with both hands. We like the manner in which Jamal uses his body to create space & finish off the backboard. He possesses an excellent mid range & pull up game from both sides of the floor & from every angle. Jamal’s shooting mechanics are very solid & he can drill spot up 3s or off the dribble from both sides of the court.
Defensively, Jamal is a tough on ball defender & he is very quick to loose balls & rebounds. He is very quick, stays low & moves well latterly. Jamal is always a threat to strip his opponent & cause deflections. He is a very dedicated hard worker & we asked Jamal about his improvements since last season & he says, ” My strength & shot mechanics have improved. I worked out with my Trainer Alpha Bangura 4 times a week this summer, with my Dad & on my own. I want work on my athleticism & explosion, speed up my shot release & increase my range beyond the 3 point line. I had very good summer with Team Movement & I want to carry that success to Carroll this season. We will surprise some teams this season. I like to study Kyrie Irving & Isaiah Thomas on cable & You Tube in my spare time.
In the classroom Jamal is a very solid student & names his parents as role models who attend most of his games. We believe Jamal has the upside of D1 mid major or minimum D2.We will be covering Archbishop Carroll, Jamal, Jibril this season with live game reports & player articles.
