Prospect Profile: Trenton Peterson (2018)
There’s no such thing as a surplus of quality defense and 3-point shooting. Trenton Peterson does both at a high level.
Peterson, a 6-foot-2 guard from Annandale High School, averaged 10 points per game as a junior, knocking down better than 40 percent of his 3-point field goal attempts while providing top-notch perimeter defense for a Cardinals team that finished third in the 2017 Class AA State Tournament.
Peterson didn’t play AAU ball this past summer but did get out and play in a number of tournaments with his high school team.
“We played in a bunch of tournaments over the summer and I think we’ll be playing in a fall league,” Peterson said. “Things went well this summer. We won a handful of tournaments. Our coaches had us split up and play with some younger guys so we weren’t all playing together all the time. And that was valuable for me as a player. I know I’ll have to take on a bigger role and improve offensively. Losing Jarod [Wilken] from last year we know guys are going to have to step up.”
Peterson isn’t sure if he’s going to play college basketball yet. He’s not talking to schools about playing and plans on majoring in architecture.
“If I got an offer I’d like to play,” Peterson said. “I’m fairly set on just going to school and architecture and not playing but if I draw some interest during the season I’d be interested in playing.”
Peterson is one of three returning double figure scorers for the Cardinals and said a big key for the team this winter will be creating easier scoring opportunities to help offset the graduation of Wilken (who averaged 18 points per game a year ago). A team that’s gone to state the last five years, Annandale will have high expectations again this winter.
“I think we’re just going to have to create more points off turnovers and steals,” Peterson said. “We might not have that big guy that can just score whenever he wants. We think we’ll be pretty good. Cathedral is in our section now so it’ll be a challenge to get back to state, but we’re excited about the challenge.”
