Jacob Kava is one of the top multi-sport athletes in North Dakota. He’d have no shortage of college interest from basketball teams if he wanted to play at that level, but he’s likely going to play football instead.
Kava, a 6-foot-5 senior at Fargo Shanley spends his Friday nights as a two-way force at tight end and linebacker and spends his winters as a double-double machine on the basketball court.
He played grassroots basketball with the Minnesota Comets growing up but when it became clear that his future would be in football, he opted to prioritize that in the summer.
“This summer was my first summer not playing AAU basketball,” Kava said. “I played with Comets before with guys like Nate Rund, Harrison Christensen and Mitch Plombon but this summer I focused on football by going to a lot of camps and stuff. I’ll probably play football in college so it made the most sense.”
Kava is drawing interest from a number of Division I programs.
“NDSU, UND and Montana State have all shown interest,” said Kava. “They all said they want to see my first four games and go from there with recruiting. I’m being recruited as a linebacker or tight end/H-back type.”
Kava’s played a key role in Shanley getting off to a good start this fall and will be a focal point for what should be a state tournament contender this winter.
“We bring back a lot of guys from last year’s team,” said Kava. “We have a couple young guys that could step up but for the most part I think we’ll be a senior-heavy team with a lot of experience. It should be a fun season.”
