Preseason All-Conference: CIML Iowa
Player of the Year: Sam Ingoli, Dowling (2018)
With great size and a high basketball IQ to pair, this 6’4 Maroons point guard should be in line for a monster season as the leader of Dowling. He’s got a Division I offer from North Dakota, and schools like Utah Valley State, Nebraska-Omaha and North Dakota State are involved. Needless to say, this will be a big year for the heady floor general.
First Team (2017-17 stats italicized)
Sam Ingoli, Dowling (2018) 14.2 PPG, 57 FG%, 44 3FG%, 3.1 APG, 7.4 RPG
Big and skilled, Ingoli will do a little bit of everything and do it remarkably well for the Maroons this season. He’ll be smart, efficient and, we think, dominant this winter for Dowling.
Camden Vander Zwaag, Johnston (2018) 11.0 PPG, 42 3FG%, 4.5 RPG
Certainly one of the best shooters in the state, Vander Zwaag will look to improve on his very decent 42 percent clip from deep from a season ago. He’ll take the reins as the main guy for the Dragons this season; look for him to bolster his assist and rebound numbers, too.
Malcolm Clayton, Fort Dodge (2018) 14.6 PPG, 83 FT%, 4.0 APG, 1.5 SPG, 4.1 RPG
A shoo-in for first team consideration, Clayton was great last season as a junior and was turning heads this summer while hoopin’ with Kingdom Hoops. The big-bodied floor general could have Fort Dodge in the win column more than people think.
Luke Appel, Marshalltown (2018) 15.6 PPG, 7.0 RPG
The CIML Iowa’s leading returning scorer, Appel seems a clear choice for the first-team. He struggled a bit shooting the ball last season, but will have a chance this winter to prove he can be a 40-plus percent shooter from deep. At 6’7 and with a butter stroke, college coaches will want to take notice.
AJ Costello, Urbandale (2018) 5.3 PPG, 55 FG%, 2.5 RPG
This could be considered our surprise pick for first-team consideration, but Costello proved during the Urbandale Team camp this past summer that he’s made huge strides with his skill development. We think he’ll make a huge leap forward while helping to lead a good Urbandale squad this winter.
