Prep Hoops Kansas Top 250 Expo: Class of 2021 Standouts
Here are two big time 2021 guards who competed at last weekend’s Prep Hoops Expo in Overland Park, Kansas.
5’11” Joseph Berry out of Topeka was a solid player who could pretty much do it all. Berry was great at getting out in transition and passing the ball and with his size as a freshman, he could play lockdown defense. What Joseph really excelled at the though was scoring the ball. Not only could he get to the rim just fine, but he has a very smooth stroke from distance. His teammates could find him all day with his ability to see the floor and find the open spot. Hitting shot after shot not only had his confidence at a high level, but his teammates were always looking for him and depended on him to take and hit the open shots. With Berry, only being a freshman, he adjusted well playing with and against kids that were much older than him. Look for Berry to earn some Varsity playing time this year although he is just a freshman!
6’2” Isaiah Mayo from Lawrence High School was undoubtedly one of the best freshman at the Expo this last Saturday. He is a very quick and agile guard who can basically glide to the bucket. Isaiah, being a bigger and longer point guard, can grab rebounds himself and push the ball up the court. His size helped him in many ways though. He could post up smaller players in the paint, he could get good looks with a jump shot, and he was able to get deflections that led to steals and transition points on the other end. That probably wasn’t even the best part of his game. What really impressed me was that he let the game come to him and was a leader on the floor. You don’t see many freshman come to a showcase or expo and lead the team. He had earned the respect and trust from his teammates and it showed throughout the day. Lawrence High School with already a pretty solid lineup will have some great depth with Isaiah Mayo climbing up the ladder!
