Pangos All-West Frosh/Soph Camp: Christopher the MOP
NORWALK, Ca. – Lakewood Mayfair High Josh Christopher turned in three exceptional performances Sunday at Cerritos Community College on the second and final day of the Pangos All-West Frosh/Soph Camp.
The 6-foot-4 Christopher led his camp squad to a couple of wins, then dropped in four 3s while scoring a game-high 20 points to pace the dark jersey-wearing team to a 112-85 over the white-jersey wearers in the Top 30 All-Star Game.
The Sunday efforts were to help Christopher edge fellow sophomores Johnny Juzang (Studio City Harvard-Westlake) and Evan Mobley (Temecula Rancho Christian) as my choice for the Most Outstanding Player of the camp that attracted approximately 220 players from the Classes of 2022 (eighth graders), ’21 (freshmen) and ’20 (sophomores).
Among those selected to the Top 30 Game (as chosen by a handful of “scouts” and camp officials) were six players from in or around Las Vegas; two from Seattle; four from Central or Northern California; one Arizona and one from Tennessee.
My choice as the other best Southern California-based sophomores over both days were Chibuzo Agbo (San Diego St. Augustine) and Jaylen Clark (Corona Centennial).
Coach Ray Barefield’s Rancho Christian squad is expected to be among the very best in the CIF Southern Section this coming season.
And three of the reasons why – Mobley (whose brother Isaiah is one of the better juniors in California), sophomore guard Jordan Montgomery and freshman forward Luke Turner – were Top 30 Game selections Sunday.
Juzang was joined by Harvard-Westlake classmate Brase Dottin in the Top 30 Game while freshman guard Paris Dawson was the second Corona Centennial player in that all-star contest.
The two consistently best Southern California players from the Class of 2021 over the two days were San Diego-based guard Christian Howell (San Marcos) and post Obinna Anyanwu (Cathedral Catholic).
The most dominant eighth-grader – and the only player from the Class of 2022 chosen to the Top 30 Game – was Kejani Wright, a resident of Culver City who attends the Windward School in Los Angeles.
