Northwest Ohio Showcase: 2018 Prospects
Yesterday, Prep Hoops checked out the Northwest Ohio Boys Basketball Showcase at Toledo Christian School. The third annual event featured players from the northwest Ohio area, with a select few driving in from out of town.
With all of the prospects, regardless of age, competing against one another, it was an opportunity for seniors to assert their maturity. Five prospects at the showcase looked particularly prepared for their chance to shine.
Charles Robinson III, 6’3” G, Toledo Woodward
Despite Robinson taking a hard fall on his back during the first game of the day, he remained aggressive in attacking the basket. Robinson runs the floor extremely hard in transition and has the ability to finish with either hand. The senior also has excellent hangtime, allowing him to be elusive in the air when defenders challenge a layup. He’s also a reliable three-point shooter when his feet are set.
In talking to Robinson, it sounds like colleges are awaiting his ACT score. Once that comes in, we encourage Division II, Division III, and NAIA programs to get actively involved.
Dishon Daniels, 6’6” W/F, Columbus Northland
As the tallest player on the Royal Blue team, Daniels naturally defended post players yesterday. Daniels excelled in this role, especially on the glass. There were few defensive rebounding opportunities that Daniels didn’t capitalize on. Once he came back down to earth with a secured rebound, Daniels pushed the pace with the dribble or outlet pass. He’s a mismatch as 4 or 5. If he’s able to find a college program that wants to play fast and small, Daniels may excel as a forward who has the ability to switch everything in the half-court.
Tyrik Barbine, 6’1” G, Toledo Start
Barbine didn’t disappoint after making his way onto our radar in June, during the Toledo summer league. Actually, he exceeded our expectations yesterday. Barbine is a strong kid who is slightly out of control on the drive, but overcomes the recklessness by bullying defenders. Also, his corner three-point jumper remains consistent. More than anything though, Barbine was a problem on defense. He has good instincts away from the ball, is super quick laterally, and appears to prefer picking up full-court. We encourage uptempo D-III programs to inquire about Barbine, as he could make an opposing point guard uncomfortable at the next level.
Delano Smith, 6’0” G, Toledo Christian
Yesterday, Smith beat opponents with his coast-to-coast speed. He out-ran defenses and scooted around traps. There were also times when his persistence to push the pace led to turnovers. Regardless, Smith is a weapon in the open floor because of his athleticism. Smith is also a capable three-point shooter who isn’t afraid to hoist up an open look from way downtown.
Christian Wagenhauser, 6’7” F, Sylvania Southview
Wagenhauser shoots jumpers at a pretty high percentage. When left open, Wagenhauser hit just about everything in the mid-range and was solid from beyond the arch. His soft touch translates to the painted area. Wagenhauser created open opportunities for himself by drifting to soft spots in the defense after setting picks. His evaluation as a prospect could rely solely on his ability to become a better rebounder and defender.
