Kinston High School: Open Gym Tour
I most recently made my rounds through the eastern part of North Carolina. Kinston High School is one of the latest stops included in the “PrepHoops NC Open Gym Tour.” Head Coach Perry Tyndall always has plenty of talent to work with and it was no surprise that there were a few fresh faces to become acquainted with.
While several notable returnees were missing due to football, there wasn’t much of a shortage in talent present in the gym. In the back-court, 6’4” junior guard Damian Dunn has vastly improved and consistently took opportunities to exploit the mismatches he normally causes with his combination of size, skill and shooting touch. It’s easy to see why he holds several division 1 offers.
Also in attendance shoring up the back-court was 6’0” senior point guard Taji Moore. Moore demonstrated an improved change of pace and really got his teammates involved. He was everywhere on defense and showed great bursts of speed with the ball. Won’t be surprised to see several D2 program put their name in the hat for him this year.
5’10” sophomore point guard Chance Minott did much of the same, playing under control, handling the ball and making shots from all over the floor. Really fast with the ball in his hands. 6’3” junior guard Judah McBynum was the biggest surprise. He got to the rim at will, knocked down shot after shot and had the most memorably play driving baseline and throwing it down over a defender on the fast-break to the delight of everyone in attendance.
6’6” freshman guard Dontrez Styles didn’t look out of place in the least bit. He used his size and length to shoot over defenders and fill the lanes in the open court. Could become an important piece for Kinston sooner than later with his combination of size, shooting ability and athleticism.
