Doctors of Dunk : Best Dunkers in the DC / DMV : Part 3
Each season players from all of Maryland/DC & Northern, VA (NOVA) produce elite athletes & dunkers. We look for high elevation, explosion & power since live games are not dunk contests. Additionally, we evaluate where & how the players get to the rim. Examples can be transition, from the wing or key off the dribble & on alley oops. We chose Julius Erving as our cover photo because many NBA & the former ABA experts point to The Doctor as the player who started the dunk phenomenon. While there were many great dunkers before Doctor J such as Gus Jonson (Baltimore Bullets) & Jumping Joe Caldwell (ABA & Atlanta Hawks), I believe Julius Erving is “The Doctor of Dunk.” Please click on photos for full size images. This is part 3 of 6. Next week part 4 posts.
RJ Blakney, 6’5″, WG, St. Maria Goretti HS. Hagerstown, MD.
Grassroots Team: Team Melo
RJ is one of the most explosive players in MD/DC & one of the best dunkers. He gets high elevation & uses his great wingspan to throw down dunks off one or legs & on alley oops. RJ has developed into an excellent all around player & heis on the brink of becoming a high major D1 player this coming season. He can play both sides of the ball & has continually made improvement to his game. We will be covering RJ & St. Maria Goretti extensively this season & will have a St. Maria Goretti team overview article within the next week Additionally, we will write an RJ Blakney Recruiting Report within the next 10 days. David McCullough, 6’8″, SF, 2018. Riverdale Baptist Crusaders HS. Upper Marlboro, MD.
Grassroots Team : New World
David possesses great explosion & he is fantastic dunker & D1 prospect. Last season Riverdale Baptist was possibly the most explosive team in the DC/DMV with Deion Hammond one of the top 5 dunkers, maybe the best. David & up & coming dunker Wayne Bristol Jr will lead the Crusaders dunk attack this season. David is an excellent player on both Sides of the ball. We will be writing a Recruiting Report for David in the next week & an updated RBHS team overview article. This season we will be providing extensive coverage for the high octane Crusaders & their players with individual player articles & live game reports. DC / DMV legendary Riverdale Baptist Head Coach Lou Wilson (18 years, 700 plus wins ) & his Crusaders are known for their fundamental, athletic & explosive players who throw down powerful high flying dunks without showboating.
Bobby Miller,6’3″,W/G, 2018. Paint Branch HS Panthers HS. Burtonsville, MD.
Grassroots Team: DC Warriors
Bobby is one of the best jumping jacks in the DC/DMV. We have seen him many times this spring & summer & Bobby always delivers an impressive dunk. When he goes vertical, Bobby looks like he is on pogo stick or shot out of a cannon. When he jumps he keeps going higher & higher& on one attempt his head was near the rim. Bobby is currently being recruited by D2 schools, but due his hard work, perimeter & ball handling improvements, Bobby could become a D1 mid major recruit. We will be following Bobby & his Panthers led by outstanding Head Coach Christopher Bohlen by providing live game reports & individual player articles. Within then next week we will be posting a Paint Branch team overview article. In our opinion the Panthers have the talent, experience & Coaching to make a deep run the MD 4A State playoffs for 2017/18.
Casey Morsell, 6’3″, CG, St. Johns HS Cadets HS. Washington, DC.
Grassroots Team: Team Takeover 16U
Last season it was very evident Casey was going to take his game to another level with his skill set, athleticism & dedication to basketball.
This summer he was name to the 1st Team All DeMatha BSN Summer League & Casey has exploded into a high major D1 recruit currently ranked as 4 star recruit. He could crack the nations top 75 2019 players this season. Casey is a tremendous. versatile player & is one of the best dunkers in the DC / DMV. He utilizes great explosion & high elevation on his off the dribble rim attacking dunks. Casey gets to the rim very fast & can dunk when has to maneuver thru defenders on his way to the rim. To date we have provided extensive coverage for Casey & the St. Johns Cadets HS. Under 1st year Head Coach Patrick Behan who transferred from St. Mary Ryken, the Cadets & SJC thrived this summer winning the DeMatha BSN Summer League. SJC is one of the deepest teams in the DC/DMV & nation with over 10 D1 prospects. We will be following SJC very closely this coming season.
