DMV Elite 80 Observations: Virginia in the House Part 1.
This Saturday in Bowie, MD, our friends from DMV Elite presented the 5th annual 2017 DMV Eite 80 showcase which featured many of the top players in the Washington, DC DMV & Baltimore DMV players for 2018, 2019 & 2020. Every player we scouted was a college prospect with many D2 & up. We will have several articles coming in the next several days. Our 1st article will cover some of the players from Nearby Northern, VA for which we will follow withe several more NOVA / VA articles regarding players at the DMV Elite 80.. Our next article will cover top players from Maryland/DC schools from the DMV Elite 80.
Marchelus Avery, 6’6″, WF/WG, 2020. Life Christian Academy Eagles. Chester, VA.
Grassroots Team: BSWL Dip
Marchelus has D1 written all over him, but we want to see how progresses the next 3 years. He is am explosive athlete who can attack the basket & flush down a power dunk. In the last year he has improved his footwork & release & overall basketball skills. Chi Chi as he is known can score from the 3 point line & from all 3 levels on & off the dribble. He can play the 2-5 at a very high level. His upside is huge and we believe if he stays focused he will be a mid major & up D1 recruit. Please view Chi Chi’s video below via Twitter, he is very impressive ss he was on Saturday at the DMV Elite 80 in Bowie, MD. We believe that Chi Chi will become a bonafide D1 target receiving many offers in the future.
Gibson Jimerson, 6’6″, WG, 2019, St. Christopher’s Saints HS. Richmond, VA.
Grassroots Team: DC Blue Devils 17U
This spring & summer Gibson was one of the shooters on the Grassroots UAA circuit & he is so good he is already a D1 player in my assessment. Gibson played a year for the DC Blue Devils 17 team a went on scoring rampage hitting 3s from everywhere & on July 13 Gibson hit 6-7 from 3 in the Blue Devils win vs Team Breakdown from Florida who played 2 top 50 ranked guards for 2018. Every few months Gibson has become leaner & quicker & adds dimensions to his game. He is clearly a stock & player to watch this season in Richmond, VA.
This video is from April 2016, Gibson has grown, gotten leaner & improved.
Matthew Urbach, 6’4″, WG, 2018. WT Woodson Cavaliers HS. Fairfax, VA.
Grassroots Team: Team Takeover Orange
Matthew has been known as a knockdown 3 point shooter, but he has added many dimensions to his game thru his hard work. Matthew is now a threat to take the ball to the rim off the dribble with excellent elevation & explosion & throw down a dunk. Perhaps he has become one of the best dunkers in the DC DMV. Will he be awarded to our next Doctors of Dunk awards team coming out in the next week? (Stay tuned )Mathew is now a bonafide D1 recruit with an offer from LaSalle.
He can score from all 3 levels on & off the dribble, is a tough defender with a very high basketball IQ, Last season he was key player for WT Woodson HS who who the Virginia Sate 6A title and despite informing our friend Head Coach Craig that his 2017/18 Warriors are top 10 DC/DMV good, he joked & said he wants to remain under the radar. However, with players like Matthew, Nate Spulock & Cody Mains whom all are team players, winners & play hard & tough the entire game. With other key returnees & newcomers we believe the Cavaliers will have an excellent season.
Qudus Wahab, 6’11”, C, 2019 Flint Hill HS. Oakton, VA.
Grassroots Team: Boo Williams 17U
Qudus is currently ranked in the top 80 -110 range by most publications in the nation for 2019. We rate him at #107 nationally & Qudus could move up in our next rankings update. He is very athletic, runs the court very well & is an elite rim protector & rebounder. We love his bounce, shot, strength & his positioning. If Qudus gets the ball in the low post or colects an offensive rebound he is always a threat to finish strong with a power dunk. He can score in the mid range and his shot from the perimeter is continually improving. Qudus has the upside to move into the top 50 nationally. We will be providing extensive coverage for Flint Hill who we believe is another team in the DMV with potential to be a top 10 ranked team. We recently wrote a piece mentioning Flint Hill in the link below:
Christian Turner discusses his transfer to Flint Hill: FH college prospects.
Jared White, 6’7″, WF/WG, 2019. St. Stephen’s & St. Agnes Saints HS. Alexandria VA.
Grassroots Team: Mid Atlantic Select
On Saturday Jared impressed us with his versatility on the perimeter & post. He is a summer stock riser who plays with a very high basketball iq & high motor. He scored from the post, and hit shots from the 3 point line with very good form. Jared showed us his excellent ball instincts on both sides of the glass & the ability to score after grabbing a board.
If not already, we believe Jared will develop into a D1 recruit because of his size, dedication, & upside. Mid Atlantic Select Coach James Lee said this last night, James has very good size @ 6″7 & he is a big forward can score inside & out. He possesses a good mid range game but can make 3s as well. In summary he is a very good offensive player, but he needs to continue to improve on the defensive end & he is working at it.”
