Class of 2019 PG Stock Risers
What lead guards in the 2019 class made the biggest leaps in the latest PrepHoopsIllinois Rankings? We look at those stock risers here!
PG Artese Stapleton (Kenwood)
Previous Ranking: #33
Current Ranking: #14
Stapleton broke out during the July live period with his play for Young & Reckless. Most casual high school basketball fans do not know this point guard because Kenwood was stacked with talent at the lead guard spot last year, but it will be his show this upcoming year for the Broncos. Stapleton has terrific speed in the open floor allowing him to get in and out of traffic while keeping his head up to make plays for himself and others. Plus on ball defender that gets several steals a game.
PG Tyler Cochran (Bolingbrook)
Previous Ranking: #24
Current Ranking: #16
Cochran made another jump up the rankings with a solid July for Hoopers Basketball Club. While Zion Griffin was the one that got all the attention those that were closely monitoring also saw that Cochran elevated his game. Cochran is a strong bodied lead guard that plays with strength. He gets in the lane and is a crafty finisher around the cup. Also is an effective spot up shooter.
PG Treyvon Calvin (St. Viator)
Previous Ranking: NR
Current Ranking: #27
Calvin went from unranked to inside the top 30 after he and his Illinois Stars squad played in some Midwest events where we were able to see them. Calvin is a quick and shifty lead guard that pushes it in transition and is a solid pull up shooter with the ball in his hands. Opened the eyes of our staff and D1 coaches with his play.
PG Traevon Brown (West Aurora)
Previous Ranking: #112
Current Ranking: #48
Brown was another Illinois Stars player that made a big leap in the rankings. Brown is an athletic point guard that really pushes it in transition. His speed is definitely his biggest asset. Takes the outlet pass and is gone the other way! He has the ability to get to the rack against other guards. Making the move over to West Aurora this year should give him a bigger spotlight.
PG Nick Kosich (York)
Previous Ranking: #111
Current Ranking: #88
Kosich is a player that was hurt in the spring so we didn’t get to see him, but he lit it up with the Illinois Wolves when we watched him in a couple July games. One contest in Milwaukee he was on fire from the perimeter not missing a single three point shot. Perimeter shooting is definitely the strength of his game. Good small college player.
