So-Cal Top 250 Expo: Best Shooters
Fountain Valley, Ca. — The inaugural Southern California Prep Hoops Top 250 Expo ,hosted in the newly-waxed gym on the campus of Fountain Valley high school, drew nearly 80 prospects of all grade levels and potential college landing spots.
The Sunday camp provided the players with top level coaching, skill work and a competitive game setting, and there were a handful of shooters who separated themselves from the pack.
Top Shooters
Bryant Howing, 2018, Los Altos
There are some guys who look the part, and then there are guys who don’t look the part, but can really play. Howing fits the latter part of the above statement. The floppy-haired, lanky, 6-foot-1 guard doesn’t need much time to
Los Altos shooting guard Bryant Howing proved to be one of the better shooters at the Prep Hoops So-Cal Top 250 Expo.get rolling from 3-point range and doesn’t need much time to get his shot off, either. Howing can shoot off the catch or off the move and with deep range, to boot.
Jarod Lucas, 2019, Los Altos
Lucas is already well-known among the SoCal basketball community as one of the area’s best shooters and he brought his burner with him to Fountain Valley. Lucas is consistent from multiple spots behind the arc and is another guy with near-unlimited range. The 6-foot-3 guard continues to improve upon his mid-range jump shot and gets great lift on his pull-up.
Connor Miller, 2019, San Dieguito
Miller made the 80-mile (or so) trip up from the San Diego area and the long drive didn’t have any negative impact on his legs. Miller took every open look he had from 3-point range and made a high percentage of them. The 5-foot-9 guard is confident stepping into his deep ball in transition, but none of his shots looked forced or out of the flow of the game.
Peyton Watson, 2021, Long Beach Poly
The youngest of the shooters, Peyton Watson will play varsity for the Jackrabbits as a freshman, a feat few others can claim. Watson is a super long 6-foot-1 shooting guard with high hips and a bounce in his step. He doesn’t need much time and space to get his shot off and gets effortless left on his jumper. What was most impressive about Watson was his understanding of how to move without the basketball. He was always on the move, coming off of screens, or relocating to an open area for a good look.
Calin Whitney, 2020, Villa Park
Whitney connected on 74 3-pointers during his freshman season at Pacifica Christian and Villa Park, his new school, is hoping he realizes similar success there as a sophomore. If Sunday was any indication, Whitney should be just fine in his new digs. The 5-foot-10 guard has the shooting mechanics all coaches want to see in their players and continues to get better shooting off the move.
