Head Coach : Christopher Lun (14th season) Coach Lun is approaching his 300th career win & is a top tier Coach in the Washington, DC DMV. Coach Lun teaches Math at Thomas Pyle Middle School which feeds into Walt Whitman.
Under Head Coach Christopher Lun’s leadership Walt Whitman won a MD 4A State Title in 2005/6 (24-3), reached the 4A State finals in 2013/14 & the MD 4A State semifinals in 2015/16. The Vikings have a long tradition of producing high caliber teams in Montgomery Count & last season finished @ 18-7 after losing to Richard Montgomery in the Regionals by 3 points.
Coach Lun runs a 4 out motion set for offense, & preaches ball movement. The Viking can run in transition, but mostly run half court sets. On defense Whitman will play half court man to man, & sometimes a match up zone. When the Viking press they usually play man to man, but on occasion will run some zone. Coach Lun is optimistic on the upcoming season & adds, ” I am very positive & I think we will be very competitive. As the year goes on we get better at basketball, and hopefully we continue this tradition. We want to be peaking at the end of the season for the 4A Regionals.
2017/18 Walt Whitman Vikings Roster:
#4 Alex Sanson, 6’1″ PG, 2018.
Alex has the potential to be awarded Montgomery County Player of the Year. The 6’1″ PG averaged 15 points, 2 assists, 2 steals & 3 plus rebounds last season & had an excellent summer for Whitman in MD Elite Summer League. Alex is very athletic, can defend, has deep range, can score from all 3 levels & he is very smart. We recently wrote this Recruiting Report for Alex who we believe is D1 mid major player at this point in time.
#12 Joey Squeri, 6’3″, WG, 2018.
Joey is a knockdown shooter who has gained 15 pounds of muscle this summer. His very shifty & creative and plays with an old school style. Joey has an excellent academic standing & he prioritizes his studies over basketball, but loves basketball & will play in college. He had an excellent summer for Whitman in the MD Elite Summer League & played in the All Star game.
# 14 Brendan Shaver, 6’2.5″,CG, 2019.
Brendan played varsity as a sophomore and posted several double digit scoring games. He is a lanky lefty who can get to the rim, a good shooter & defender. Brendan is currently a D3 prospect.
#15 Erik Jensen, 6’2″, F, 2018.
Erik is a probable starter & he had a good summer. Erik possesses sneaky athleticism & can dunk in games where he likes to score in transition.. He is a good man to man defender & rebounder & has become more confident on offense.
#32 Adam Smith, 6’3″, C/PF, 2018,
Adam is a probable starter who is very strong. He is the Vikings best help-side defender, Adam’s improved his post moves in addition to his overall offense.
#44 Abdou Diouf, 6’9″, C, 2018.
Abdou came to Maryland from the Senegal. He is very athletic & has improved this summer. Abdou has the potential to give Whitman a huge lift this year.
Kai Holloway, 5’11”, PG, 2020.
Kyles plays football for Whitman & he will be one of the Vikings 1st guards 1st guards off the bench. He is a good defender, quick, and handles ball well. His father played in the NFL.
Phillip Diby, 6’2″, G, 2019,
Phiilip will be in the Whitman rotation. He was the JV teams leading scorer, & is athletic, good in transition, & he likes transition and driving to the basket. Last season he got better & better as the season progressed. Phillip plays a high motor & has the potential to become a college prospect.
