Virginia Summer Stock Boosters: 2020 Guards
Virginia was well represented on the grassroots circuit this summer. As the season winds down and many players return from AAU back to their high school squads, we’ll be taking a look back at some of the players who have raised their stock the most since last high school season. Below, we take a look at five rising sophomore guards who are set to make serious noise after strong play this summer.
JEREMY ROACH | PAUL VI
Jeremy Roach won a lot of games this summer, both for his AAU club and his country. The rising sophomore, who earned a spot on the Team USA FIBA Americas 16U Gold Medal Squad, led Team Takeover to a 44-1 record, and a . Roach has reportedly received offers from Miami, Virginia, and Villanova among others.
CAM THOMAS | OSCAR SMITH
Cam Thomas put on an offensive clinic throughout the summer with 16U Boo Williams, and helped lead his team earn a . The 6’3 guard, who has begun to grow into his body, is an underrated defender with a very good feel for the game. Thomas showcased his ability to consistently finish in traffic at Hoop Group Future All American, where he was selected as a top 20 all star.
XAVIER LIPSCOMB | ST. STEPHENS & ST. AGNES
After a solid freshman campaign in which he played a significant role in the back court, Xavier Lipscomb continued to progress on the AAU circuit as a key player for Team Durant. The rising sophomore, who led his team to a , did so with solid play on both ends of the floor.
JAHMAL BANKS | BISHOP O’CONNELL
Jahmal Banks will likely get a huge opportunity for O’Connell this season, and he appears ready for the task. The long and lanky 6’5 wing had a solid run with 6th Man 2020 this summer, and showed signs of increased production during summer league.
GARRETT JOHNSON | OAKTON
He may or may not make a significant impact this season, but Garrett Johnson has a chance to be a big time player. Not only is he an excellent shooter who can mix it up a bit off the bounce, but the rising sophomore appears to be in the middle of a growth spurt.
