Summer Sleepers (2018)
As our colleague Devin Ugland pointed out the summer stock raisers in the Classes of 2018 and 2019, I will be displaying the summer sleeper prospects that showed flashes of their potential. They may not have much college attention going on at the moment, but they definitely opened some eyes with college recruiters and coaches during the July evaluation period and they possess the upside to garner more during the regular season.
Summer Sleepers (2018)
Dorian Harris (Cerritos, CA/ Cerritos)
2018, WF, 6-foot-5, 180 pounds
Joel’s Take: After being unveiled at the Pangos Premier 80, Harris continued to exhibit his all-around game the rest of the summer including an impressive outing at the UCI Summer Camp. This jack-of-all-trades prospect should be getting interest from the Division II level and Low Division programs.
Mike Meadows (North Hollywood, CA/ Campbell Hall)
2018, CG, 6-foot-1, 155 pounds
Joel’s Take: Meadows had some moments at the Pangos All American Camp where he hit some timely jump shots versus a bevy of high-level Division 1 players. However, it was in July that Meadows showed his metal where he exhibited solid playmaking skills to go along with a lethal jump shot as he led his team (BTI Select) to the Pangos 16 Championship.
Alex Garcia (Rolling Hills Prep)
2018, 6-foot-3, 175 pounds
Joel’s Take: Hard-nosed, savvy, and skilled describes Mr. Garcia. He is always mentally engaged in the game at both ends and he has legitimate jump shot that extends out to 22-feet. What makes Garcia intriguing for the next level is his ability to play both guard positions as he has the feel for the game to run an offense and make the appropriate play.
DeShawn Washington (San Bernadino, CA/ Cajon)
2018, SG, 6-foot-4, 170 pounds
Joel’s Take: The physical attributes are there for Washington. He is a late-blooming prospect that could benefit by taking a couple of years developing in the junior college ranks. He has a quick 1st step, some innate scoring skills in the paint area, and he plays with energy. He needs to gain strength and continue to develop his skill set, but he has Division 1 potential.
Gary Harris (Los Angeles, CA/ Price)
2018, SG, 6-foot-4, 175 pounds
Joel’s Take: This high-flying wing-type excels in transition due to his lengthy frame, explosiveness, and competitive nature. He can finish in a variety of ways in transition due to his slashing ability. His jump shot is streaky as is his ball handling against pressure, but the upside is there for him to play somewhere in college with continued development.
