Rumble on the River Scouting Report pt. 1
The Rumble on the River was a skills and exposure camp this Saturday in New Orleans, and they were able to attract some top end talent, going all the way from 6th grade to upcoming seniors. It was a really well put on event, and was competitive the entire time I was there. I just want to thank everyone there for all of your hospitality, and say that NOLA23 is a top-notch organization that is steadily on the rise. I look forward to big things in their future.
Kaleb Jenkins 6’0 G Country Day 2019
Jenkins is a really high IQ player, and is a strong slasher. He can get to the goal, and finish well around the rim and through contact. He is a smart cutter, and was able to get a good amount of easy points that way. He can still improve as a ball handler, and got flustered when intense pressure was put on him.
Jamiree Williams 6’3 G Central Lafourche 2018
Williams is an absolute high flyer, and pregame he was throwing down alley oops through his legs. During the game, he hit a few threes, and was able to get some dunks in transition, and overall looked good against some really good competition. His athleticism and near limitless potential are some of the main reasons that he was recently able to pick up an offer to Nicholls St.
Rashawn Gallaspy 6’6 C Slidell 2019
Gallaspy is a pretty good post player, with a handfull of go-to moves and counter that seemed to really work for him, as he was able to score well in the post. He has good vision out of the post, and is looking to pass if the help side defense gets lazy. He is still going to have to get better outside of 15 ft, but if he can continue to expand his game, Slidell could have a totally different ceiling this season.
Quang Nguyen 5’6 G Helen Cox 2018
Nguyen is quite undersized, even for the lead guard spot, but is able to use a high basketball IQ to be successful. Despite his size, he can finish well around the rim. He knows his strength and his weaknesses, and isn’t going to try to play outside of his skill set or try to do too much. He is a guy that is always going to make his coaches job easier.
Javon Ruffin 6’3 G Newman 2021
Ruffin was a guy that a few of the coaches were talking very highly about before the game. He is the son of former NBA player and current Pelicans coach Michael Ruffin. He started the game looking a bit tentative, playing against mostly older players, but had multiple stretches were he scored at a high level, including a 8-0 run by himself, making 2 NBA range threes with a hand in his face. Ruffin is definitely a player to watch for going forward, and might be at the top of the 2021 class.
MVP: Corey Smooth 6’0 G Rummel 2020
Smooth controlled the whole game every time he touched the floor, and was able to affect the game in multiple ways outside of scoring. The thing I was most impressed with was his ability to get his teammates wide open layups time and time again, both in the half-court and transition. He had 4-5 incredible passes that simply left the defense in the dust.
