Recruiting Report: Tyrell Terry (2019)
Tyrell Terry’s sophomore basketball year included another DeLaSalle state title, a pair of high major scholarship offers, and a 33-9 record with D1 Minnesota.
“The AAU season went well, we didn’t finish in Vegas how we wanted but it was still a success,” Terry said. “My biggest takeaway was that I saw some very good talent but next year people are only going to get better so I have to be ready for that.”
The D1 Minnesota squad needed Terry to hit open shots, create his own offense, create shots for others, and of course run a balanced offense. Terry did this things quite well. So what is his focus before basketball practice starts in 3.5 months?
“I definitely need to work on my strength and gaining weight,” Tyrell said. “Also to improve my overall game such as my shot and things like that.”
DeLaSalle has won six straight state titles. The Islanders lost Mr. Basketball finalist Goanar Mar to the college level (George Mason) but return Minnesota committed Gabe Kalscheur plus added Jamison Battle, Tyrell’s D1 Minnesota teammate, to their roster.
“Our team is going to be very talented again,” Terry explained. “The addition of Jamison Battle is huge for us. Our main goal is to win a seventh straight state title.”
Terry has earned five scholarship offers so far: Iowa, Nebraska, Northern Iowa, Drake, and North Dakota. Others are calling with interest.
“The schools that have offered me check up on me quite often,” Terry explained. “(In addition to those offered) Butler, Minnesota, Creighton, and Denver have spoken with me most often since Vegas.”
When we were in attendance the Iowa Hawkeyes were a regular presence. The Hawkeye offer was big for Terry.
“My offer from Iowa was big for me,” Tyrell said. “I really connect with their coaches especially coach Andrew Francis. When I went to a football game there, the environment was awesome. It seems like a great place to be.”
Minnesota has also been in the crowd looking at Tyrell. At this point the 6-foot-2 point guard is the second best prospect in Minnesota after Matthew Hurt so Gopher fans will be watching him close.
“I hear from Minnesota every once in awhile. Their program is on the rise and it’s very impressive to see. It’s also cool seeing the three in-state 2018s commit there.”
