Ty Woelber is one of the top athletes in southern Minnesota. He put that athletic talent on display throughout the summer playing with the Southwest Minnesota Stars.
Woelber, a 6-foot-1 wing from Pipestone, spent the grassroots season providing top-notch ‘3-and-D’ play for the Stars.
“It was really fun,” said Woelber. “A good team to be on. A lot of great guys, energetic guys. None of the ‘all about me, it’s my team,’ kind of guys. None of that.”
Woelber certainly plays a big role for his high school team as not only a high-level defender but also as an offensive player. He’s asked to score and carry a larger load on that end. With his AAU team, that wasn’t his role. And he was okay with that because he understands that it’s more likely that if he does play in college, that would likely be the kind of role he’d play.
“It helps a lot,” said Woelber. “This can be similar to playing in college where I might into play a ton right away and I’d ease into a certain role. It’s good to experience that kind of style of play and learn how to help my team in different kinds of ways.”
When it comes to college, Woelber will have no shortage of options regarding his future. Not only is he a quality basketball prospect, he’s a top-notch track star and the reigning state high jump champion.
“Still a lot of options on the table right now,” said Woelber. “I’m a big track guy as well. Won state in high jump and took second in triple. I’ve got the University of Sioux Falls, Augustana, Moorhead State, Mankato State – those are the main ones. Football and basketball are both on the table too. I don’t have a lot of offers for basketball. USF has talked to me a little bit. We’ll see what happens.”
