Recruiting Report: Isaac Fink (2019)
Who is the best small school outstate player in Minnesota’s junior class? That’s easy. Springfield’s Isaac Fink.
Springfield went 29-4 last winter pushing all the way to the semi-finals of the Class A tournament with Fink scoring a team high 20.4 points per game. Isaac was a sophomore playing on a balanced team but he still grabbed 13 boards a contest and averaged nearly five assists.
Isaac is also a strong baseball player which of course is the number one conflict with spring and summer basketball’s nine or ten event schedule. When Isaac was with the D1 Minnesota Rise 17u squad he was one of the top players helping them to a 26-win season.
“AAU this year went pretty well,” Fink told Prep Hoops. “There was a lot of new faces in the Rise program and it was exciting getting to meet and play with them. We also won our fair share of games as well.
“Although I didn’t make a lot of the tournaments because of baseball, when I was there Coach Kettner and the players accept me back in right away.
“It is tough to get in the gym as much as I’d like during the AAU season because of baseball. Which may have showed throughout the AAU year. I think the biggest thing I can take away from these last four months is that there is always room for improvement in my game.
Fink returns to a Springfield team that has four of it’s top five guys back. Fink, senior Tanner Vogel, sophomore Decker Scheffler, and Andrew Beckman among others. Beckman stands 6-foot-6 but he’s the only size the team has so Fink at 6-foot-3/6-foot-4 is going to need to play some around the basket as well (Fink is more of a skilled wing who plays some point too).
“I’m working on improving my post game along with my mid-range shot,” Fink said. “With my high school team I am going to have to go in the post at times and I want to be able to take advantage of that in this next year.”
Springfield will be one of the elite teams in Class A this year likely coming into the year as the preseason one or two. They won 29 of 33 last year and bring most of their top talent back.
“We lost a couple of key players but I feel like we could be just as good or better than last year. We have a lot of good young talent coming up that will need time, but will be very good in the future. Our goal from day one will be to win a state championship. After last year’s loss we are very hungry to get back to the state tournament, and win a state title.”
When people talk about Fink they ask “will he play baseball?” but this is a young man that loves basketball.
“At this point I’ve heard mostly from Augustana and Southwest Minnesota State for basketball,” Fink said. “I’ve heard from other schools for baseball as well. At this point basketball is my number one priority and probably the sport I want to play in college unless there is a situation where I could play both.”
Fink is focused on becoming one of the top names in the junior class.
“I want to continue building off of last year and keep becoming a better overall player. I want to become one of the best players in the state regardless of Class.”
